The House Ways and Means Committee, by party line 15–10, barred witnesses from proposing alternative taxes to raise 4 billion dollars and prevented discussion or record submission of substitutes, focusing on the excess profits levy sought by the Truman Administration.
The Ways and Means Committee moved to finish hearings by next Wednesday with a 15 minute limit per witness and limits on multiple witnesses per industry. Republicans denounced the pace as a gag and steamroller as Democrats push a 75 percent levy on excess corporate profits aiming to have a bill ready by December 1.
Mrs. Susie V. Bailey sues the Northern Virginia Power Company for 15000 damages claiming her husband Jesse J. In Clarke County Jail since October 25 Crede Russell 43 of El Paso and James Parks 43 of Roanoke were held for the grand jury on manslaughter charges for the death of George M. Gough 37 of East Bend N C after a fight in a bunk house night of October 21 at H F Byrd Inc apple workers site. Bail set at 5000 each.
The Winchester temperature rose to 67 degrees today as an unusually mild spell continues briefly. Showers are predicted in parts of the state tonight with tomorrow expected to be mostly sunny but windy and colder.
