Egyptian soldiers hoisted their flag near Mount Sinai as Israel completed its fourth-stage withdrawal from 1967 war territory. The ceremony, attended by officials, marked a symbol of sovereignty over the sacred site in the Sinai peninsula.
Winchester residents qualify for Virginia Fuel Assistance aimed at easing winter heating bills. The city will get 53,577 dollars, distributed by the Department of Social Services, but aid may reach only 267 families at the maximum 200 dollars each. 1,038 families are eligible under the state program.

NBC reports three crew members Martin Fletcher Barry Fox and Derek Heriicx were seized at gunpoint and taken into the occupied U S Embassy compound in Tehran. NBC knows little about captors or duration as hundreds of militant students hold the embassy and nine hostages since November 4.

The convention marks the first leadership handoff since 1962.
The Frederick County committee found 202.16 in long distance calls charged to the county for personal use by sheriff staff. Sheriff Carroll Mauck did not make or know of the calls and has reimbursed the cost. Other areas showed no misuse of funds, and the panel endorsed gasoline purchases via county credit cards as cost effective.
The Winchester Frederick County Historical Society and the National Science Foundation host a 50th anniversary of Admiral Richard E Byrd’s South Pole flight at Handley auditorium tonight. The program features a Navy concert at 7 p.m. and speeches from 8 p.m. with Dr Lawrence Gould among the speakers. Admission is free.
