A Tennessee mountaineer sparked a nationwide effort to fund the 1924 Democratic campaign with five dollar Victory Club checks. Chairman Cordell Hull organized clubs in six thousand towns, aiming for at least one hundred thousand members and a million dollars, with early sums already totaling thousands from Tennessee and other states.
