Christmas Club checks totaling 1 092 748 will be mailed to 8 442 members tomorrow by Winchester banks. The three banks report record totals and more members than ever, with average payment this year 117 45 compared to 124 54 last year.
The Virginia Junior Chamber of Commerce adopted a resolution at the conference here calling Blue Law Sunday closing statutes out of date. They urged laws be written to minimize intrusion on individual rights and supported a plan to create a freedom academy to train government workers and citizens for a free society.
Wandering along Merriman's Lane this morning Jack Pennypacker found a daisy defying the weather and warmly welcomed spring. On the gridiron James Wood Handley and Clarke County players met Saturday with colors mixed as Dickie Goode and Goose Tomblin starred for VPI and TECH in a 24 to 15 Wake Forest win at Winston Salem. The forecast calls for cloudy skies tomorrow with warmth, and a cold spell starting Thursday with possible showers midweek.
Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson dedicates an eight foot bronze statue of Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd on the Virginia bank of the Potomac near the Arlington Memorial Bridge. He praises Byrd as a restless explorer who drove progress and faced danger with joy and confidence.
Washington AP reports the Supreme Court United States reversed a capital-case conviction. Justice Douglas delivered the unanimous decision citing prejudice from lack of counsel and the need for competent defense to plead intelligently. The ruling also touches on other cases involving arrests, reviews, and probation related actions.
United Nations debate on Congo resumes with calls for force to end Katanga secession. Ethiopian delegate Tesfaye Gebre-Egzi and Congo Foreign Minister Justin Bomboko to speak as Western powers press for UN troops to back Leopoldville’s central government.
J Drexel Biddle dies at Wanzer Army Hospital at 8 02 a m of a heart attack. He would have turned 65 soon and had returned from Madrid on October 12 for Spain treatment. He began as U S ambassador to Norway and retired in 1944 to serve as a lieutenant colonel with the European contact section of Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in 1945.
Former Soviet foreign minister Vyacheslav Molotov arrives in Moscow from Vienna amid a party purge aimed at erasing remnants of the Stalin era. Molotov, 71, appeared unrestrained as he faced family discussions and no public greeting, with a few plainclothes police observing.
In San Yee Zoo Antonio a tiger attack injured a attendant as Dellis reached inside the cage to assist. The tiger mauled the hand before the attendant could free it. Tonight at 8 at Handley Auditorium a Lions Club benefit show titled The Helpmate runs with tickets at $1.50 for adults and 75 cents for students.
Three cheers marked the Jackson First Brigade reunion in November 1861 era re enacted by Civil War units. Fritz Haselberger played Gen Jackson and spoke of sacrifice and dedication as troops gathered in front of Jackson headquarters on N Braddock Street. Four U.S. Air Force F101 jets are credited by reliable informants with aiding South Vietnam as scouts locating Viet Cong bases and movements. The jets have flown from Saigon International Airport for three weeks, guiding South Vietnamese strikes. Adm. John M. Sides visited Saigon as the 7th Fleet center of gravity is described near Viet Nam trouble.
Stephens City mayor Lynn H Comer said the town cannot proceed with its planned sewer system if boundaries total only about 40 acres. Circuit Judge Elliott Marshall ruled the town's boundaries are smaller than officials assumed, leaving no bond issue means no sewer plan.

AP reports searchers found the body of Goliath the small monkey that died when an Atlas missile exploded 30 seconds after launch. Wreckage was recovered from the Atlantic floor off Cape Canaveral about 100 yards offshore. The animal's body was unmarked aside from a blood spot.
