In the Pacific near Honolulu the sunken Carnelian-1 left crew clinging to logs and an upside down lifeboat as ships including the Hunter and Wisteria fought heavy seas 1400 miles from Honolulu. Rescue planes dropped survival kits and six rubber rafts while weather hampered efforts.
The first measurable snowfall of the season brought light incidents and travel advisories across Virginia. Two minor fender benders were reported in Clarke County. Winchester had about one inch of snow at 8 am while roads remained largely clear and schools opened on time. Temperatures hovered in the 30s with little road disruption expected, though some western counties saw heavier accumulations.
Virginia Governor Mills Godwin says he will not take a side on tax increases until the General Assembly reveals its plan to address a shrinking general fund. He warns of possible major cuts to education welfare and mental health if new revenues are not found and says he might sign tax legislation depending on specifics.
