The United States government plans to implement the Social Security Act for all employers with one or more workers on November 16 1936. Employers will receive identification forms via the Winchester post office to assign account numbers to employees and enable monthly retirement checks after age sixty five.
After Armistice Day the area shifts focus to Thanksgiving as farms show large turkey flocks. Many individual and commercial producers appear to be winding down, yet the poultry sections promise ample birds for the holiday feast.
Mrs Virginia Knight Fuller widow of Charles A Fuller died at 1 30 pm yesterday at her Amherst Street home on the historic Steel Gardens property after nearly a year of illness. Born August 6 1855 in Sippensburg Pa she later moved with her family to Chambersburg and married Mr Fuller who became a long time general foreman for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Winchester before his death in 1930. She was a member of the Chambersburg Methodist Episcopal Church.
In London a bill to abolish the decree nisi and broaden divorce grounds was introduced in Parliament. Led by A. P. Herbert it would allow divorce after irretrievable breakdown but prohibit any divorce within five years of marriage. Mrs. Simpson remains unaffected by the measure.
Civilian Conservation Corps men returning from a Forest camp Armistice Day celebration were killed or injured when the truck failed to negotiate a curve and plunged into Robinson’s Run. Four dead include Thomas Tulley, Thomas Robertson, C Solman, and J A Dalton. Fourteen others were hospitalized with serious injuries. Pneumonia feared among those exposed to cold water. camp physician notes shock and exposure as critical factors.
James H. Spence a 70 year old Frederick county farmer died after two years of illness at the home of his son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs R E Bun cutter 800 S Stewart street He was born October 11 1866 and is survived by two daughters Mrs L C Reynolds and Mrs R E Bun cutter and a son Holmes Spence The funeral will be at 2 pm Friday from the Bun cutter home with Rev Seastrunk Rev Lowe and Rev Jones officiating Interment in Mount Hebron Cemetery
King Edward and a small party visited Mrs. Wallis Simpson at No. 16 Cumberland Terrace after Armistice Day services. Reports linking Simpson to royal events were denied. the king later inspected Portland naval units.
Rotary luncheon at George Washington Hotel featured two Rotary International films. Rotary In Action showed progress projects in the U S Canada Mexico including roads lighting pools and youth programs. A Mexico City clip highlighted Ed R Johnson Roanoke becoming Rotary International president and a letter announced a late Henry H Courtenay legacy to Rotary’s student loan fund in Winchester. Visiting Rotarians Clem Lewis Orville Van Deusen and L S Rohr attended.
The Girls' Sport Club met last night at 8 for a bowling match. The B team defeated the A team. The next match is scheduled for Wednesday night.
Federal agents and state police hunted a gunman and two men and a woman who seized a New Jersey state trooper after a traffic stop. They fled into Pennsylvania and dumped the bound prisoner in a ditch. A nationwide alert covered the suspect car with Michigan plates.
George W. Dellinger, a Confederate veteran and Shenandoah County native, celebrated his 91st birthday at his son’s home on National Avenue. A quiet day with a planned dinner honored him, reflecting his wishes for an uneventful celebration. He served in the Confederate Army, Company I Twenty third Virginia Cavalry under General Imboden.
Eagle Texas November 12 Vice President John Nance Garner travels with Ben Franklin to a rattlesnake tank near Eagle. They paddle for bass and dine on lamb barbecued at a campfire. Garner naps after a nap praised as the best since the campaign began.
Winchester marked the eighteenth Armistice Day with a subdued program led by Robert T. Conrad Post and Winchester Veterans of Foreign Wars. A parade in service uniforms followed by a silence and taps, memorial services, sales by the American Legion Auxiliary, and a Martinsburg Apple Fair attendance. Col. B M Roszel of Winchester spoke on military preparedness to applause.
On Tuesday November 17 the Achievement program of the Home Demonstration clubs of Frederick county will be held at the Episcopal Parish House on West Boscawen street. The Advisory Board meeting starts at 9 30 with Miss Elizabeth Farrar noting it as the year’s most important. Plans include reviewing work, setting 1937 programs, selecting major and minor projects, and county goals under the theme The Family Approach with about 50 representatives from nine groups. Fred Stine will discuss the agricultural program and residents the contributions to country life. Miss Josephine Fultz of Front Royal will address resettlement in northern Virginia, followed by Miss R Belle Burke of Charlottesville, district supervisor.
D. J. Howard of Winchester and supervisor of vocational agriculture in northern Virginia credited media use for the Virginia Association of Future Farmers of America success. He noted the national convention in Kansas City named the Virginia unit best in the United States and urged giving boys responsibility to reveal leadership qualities. Continued on page eleven.
Winchester officials anticipate Works Progress Administration funds for a water line extension in the western city area. Total project cost is 12708 dollars with 8260 federal funds and 4448 city funds. Plans were revised and sent to federal authorities. final blueprints are awaited. A separate storm sewer project seeks about 25695 dollars but no action is announced.
Tonight at 7 oclock the Central Tea Room at 115 N. Cameron St. near Capital Theatre hosts music and dancing with sandwiches and beer.
