In Kenton Ohio on Sunday night the Pennsylvania Railroad’s Pennsylvanian rear crashed after a cylinder head blew from a freight locomotive. At least 12 people died and about 40 were injured as the train rammed a control tower at Dunkirk, near Kenton. Mae Williams, 67, of Rockford Illinois, was identified at a funeral home about a day after the wreck.
An 18 hour union session at the Carnegie-Illinois Steel armor plate section slowed factory output at the South Charleston naval ordnance plant. Key crane operators press crews and maintenance men were recalled from three shifts to discuss grievances under the Steel Workers Organizing Committee contract. The meeting ended with workers returning to their posts and a promise grievances would be adjusted.
At noon today a collision at the corner of South Loudoun and Cecil streets involved Cassell Biggs 18 driving south on Loudoun and Warren Perry D. 22 of the 31st Engineers at Fort Belvoir turning left onto Loudoun. Biggs was struck. no charges have been filed by investigators.
State police report eight deaths in Fall River Massachusetts presumed from food poisoning and autopsies were ordered to determine the exact cause. No details on shared meals or other poisoning forms were immediately available as intestines are to be examined microscopically.
DANVILLE November 11. R M Evans agricultural adjustment administrator said Britain must receive increased American food to withstand Axis aggression. He cited milk eggs and livestock as vitally needed while tobacco trade would rise. Evans recently visited England with Paul Appleby to study food supply issues.
German forces east of Leningrad threaten to cut a Soviet supply route from the United States and Britain while large Nazi forces are reportedly trapped near Volokolamsk. Soviet dispatches claim Red Army losses near Maloyaroslavets and renewed German attacks repelled. Berlin says German troops push toward Archangel corridors and Karelia threatens supply lines. Prisoners show exhaustion from the Moscow battle. Churchill refuses to bomb Rome despite Commons pressure as Sevastopol and Kerch remain objectives in the Crimea with details sparse.
In Los Angeles on November 1 a man with a knife allegedly kidnapped M. C. Walt, a cheese company sales superintendent, forcing him to drive around while the suspect claimed he planned to rob. Walt had about $300 on him.
