Rhodesian black nationalist leaders insisted on full independence under black majority rule within 12 months. They reiterated this stance in talks with Ivor Richard, the British chairman of the Rhodesia settlement negotiations that have stalled since their opening on October 28 in Geneva.
Africa's black nations prepare another push for Security Council approval of economic and military sanctions against South Africa amid Western veto doubts. The General Assembly had denounced apartheid with 10 resolutions, while Sweden proposed an embargo on new investments. Leaders met with British diplomat and Rhodesian reform talks continued as Kissinger held strategy talks in Washington.
San Quentin guards uncovered a 67 foot long tunnel ten feet under the prison yard. The dirt-filled room held three inmates who braced the shaft with wood, wired lights, a ventilation fan, and a radio telephone based communications system. Spokesman Bill Merkle called it Jimmy Cagney stuff and estimated two more weeks to finish. The convicts had been at work for about a month and the tunnel neared the outer wall of the structure.
