Soviet and German reports describe heavy fighting across Ukraine and Russia with Russian forces advancing near Kiev and Smolensk regions. Berlin says German counterattacks regain ground while Moscow reports German casualties and persistent Red Army pressure along the Dnieper and Crimea fronts.
The week of November 15 targets raising $20 000 for the War Fund chest with the slogan Give Double The World is in Trouble The Farmville Herald noted a call to support service members through USO facilities and funds. An executor's sale of Gordin A Reed furniture at 25 West Cork Street set for 10 oclock November 12 1943.
The article reports Heinrich Himmler’s Gestapo tightening control on the home front as Nazi leaders order intensified preparedness. Goebbels and SS chiefs plan strengthened security police, stricter party formations, and tighter control of industrial and port areas amid wartime turmoil.
Twenty one county men ordered to the Roanoke Induction Station on Monday November 8 were accepted for service. Eighteen will report November 29 to the Army, two to the Navy and one to the Marine Corps. The Frederick County Draft Board released the list of accepted men including four volunteers.
Commander Morton C. Mumma of Berryville Virginia receives the Legion of Merit from Vice Admiral Arthur S. Carpenter for directing the seventh fleet PT boat squadron operations in New Guinea. The citation notes sinking one enemy submarine and damaging Japanese destroyer auxiliaries. Commander Mumma's wife is former Miss Virginia Elder of Berryville.
Interior Secretary Ickes told the House Insular Affairs Committee he supports cutting wasteful spending as he stood with four aides and Gov. Charles Harwood when asked to identify federal workers in the room. He criticized investigations as wasteful of public funds and time.
Goss told the Grange convention that farmers should resist government food subsidies and high farm prices. He warned inflation would devastate the nation and urged wage restraint, rationing or price ceilings, and an income tax savings plan to dampen spending. He blamed industry and labor for rising prices, not agriculture.
W Nelson Page and Steve R Sammis announce the War Fund Drive personnel for a $20 000 campaign in Winchester and Frederick County to aid USO and service members. Campaign director Ed Molden stresses the need to Give Double to support troops at home and abroad.
Winchester marks Armistice Day with a 10 30 a m ceremony at the courthouse where Mrs Fay Miller receives the Army Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster from Capt M H Roblin. The Rev E T Clark will speak and city businesses may close 10 30 to 12 30 in tribute to WW I veterans.
Two Winchester men will depart for Fort Meade Maryland on Monday November 15Reporting to the Winchester City Draft Board at 1045 they will depart by bus at 1115 The men are George S Taylor acting corporal and Clyde F E Maphis

The Navy announced the loss of three destroyers Henley and Chevalier in the South Pacific and Atlantic battles including Borie. Henley sank after a torpedo strike. Chevalier wrecked in combat and collision. Borie rammed and sank two U boats before being sunk by planes. The task force earned a Presidential Unit Citation for anti submarine operations.
Travelers returning from France describe Vichy as a machinegun fortified shelter for Pierre Laval. Laval has allegedly increased his personal body guards to six, with Marshal Henri being encircled by additional security.
Col Joseph Button former Virginia insurance commissioner died at 78 in Richmond after a yearlong illness. Native of Lynchburg he served 12 years as clerk of the State Senate 20 years as chairman of the Tenth District Congressional Committee and ten years as secretary of the State Democratic Committee. He was elected state insurance commissioner in 1906 serving until 1929. Funeral plans pending. He survived by his widow Annie Donald Button a niece and five nephews.
City and County notes credit Robert Y. Conrad Post No. 21 American Legion for supplying turkeys to multiple Winchester and Frederick county homes to support Legion coffers. Committeemen C Douglas Brown William R Armel Robert T Jones and Robert T a Jr oversee the drive with recipients Hazel Newlin Robert Newlin Lester Lucas Curtis L Seabright and W H Reed. A turkey rodeo on Gerrard Street drew laughs as a gobbler fled handlers and chased by onlookers. Eleven Winchester men departed for Fort Meade for military training with Harold Funk providing one man band entertainment at the bus terminal.

Italy sees U S Fifth Army repelling nine German counter-attacks toward Rome while British Eighth Army advances near Santerno River. In Bougainville a Japanese barge land reinforcement appears, Marines hold Empress Augusta Bay. Submarine losses rise for Axis as Allied navies claim new sinkings. De Gaulle takes undisputed control of the French Committee of National Liberation as Giraud resigns as co president.
Washington reports the push for congressional action to avert a railroad strike involving 1.1 million workers. A Senate panel questions Vinson over rejecting an eight-cent wage increase and considers a joint resolution to override him. George M. Harrison says unions may strike after a membership vote, with ballots due by November 25.
London reports Minister Richard Law told the House of Commons Allies asked Premier Badoglio to remove Gen Mario Roatta as chief of staff after an investigation of complaints. The case of Gen Vittorio Ambrosia remains under consideration by Gen Dwight Eisenhower amid Yugoslav war crimes charges.
US Marines, tanks, artillery, and planes clash with several hundred Japanese who landed north of Empress Augusta Bay as Bougainville’s beachhead tightens. Northern and southern Japanese thrusts are repelled. 125 plus Japanese killed as the battle presses along the Torokina coast.
Allied headquarters reports nine German counterattacks in 24 hours against American troops near Venafro and the Volturno line were repulsed. U S Liberators hit Ball Bearing works at Villar Perosa and Ansaldo Steel Works Genoa as the Eighth Army gains Castiglione and Forlì.
The State purchased an additional one acre tract from Shenandoah Valley Apple Cider and Vinegar Corp. near the Winchester Research Laboratory for 1192 dollars and fifty cents. Dr. Walter S. Hough says expansion plans depend on Virginia Legislature approval and would place a new laboratory on the recently acquired site, separate from the existing buildings.
Yugoslav partisans led by Gen. Josip Broz Tito announced wide assaults in Serbia with Stip captured from Germans. They claimed recapture of Andrijevica in Montenegro and heavy fighting around Croat border towns including Zumberak Novo Mesto Kocevye Bros Delnice. Claims also included driving Germans from Ljub and derailment actions in Bosnia.
Maggie M. Rhodes 79 of Middletown died yesterday at the Wayside Inn after a period of declining health and strokes. She was linked to the Guyer and Rhodes families, former Baker & Co. manager relatives, and leaves five children, siblings, and many relatives. Funeral at Grace Methodist Church with interment at Mt. Hebron Cemetery.
