Prisoners and Sheriff Escape Death In Clarke Jail Fire
Seven prisoners and Sheriff Buckner and family narrowly escaped suffocation as a fire in Clarke County Virginia destroyed the jail basement. Discovered at 4 50 am by the sheriff s daughter Gloria 13 the blaze trapped the building s upper cell block and 5 am saw prisoners awakened by screams before volunteers freed them. Deputy Perry Smith and officer Pete Carper led the escape with help from local residents and firemen, saving six prisoners who were in individual cells plus the sheriff and family escaped to safety.
