A violent tornado strikes La Plata causing at least 15 deaths and extensive damage to a school building. Rescue crews search the wreckage as authorities assess the disaster and its impact on students and families.
A deadly tornado swept through southern Maryland striking La Plata and Cedarville, killing 15 and injuring about 20. The La Plata school suffered the most with 11 youths and staff killed as the building and nearby fields were wrecked, while farms and a church were leveled further along the path. Rescue crews from Washington aided, four hospitalized victims later died.
Governor Byrd urged drastic reforms for Virginia in a Norfolk talk at the College of William and Mary class opening on Citizenship and Present Day Politics. He outlined a short ballot plan and said a state government simplification commission would report in sixty days, signaling a possible February special session of the General Assembly.
Mrs. Martha A. Morrison, widow of Thomas E. Morrison, died at her Gore area home after a long illness. Born March 24, 1852 in Frederick county, she was a Bethel Church member and is survived by her son Floyd Morrison. Services planned at Bethel Church in Trone with interment there.
Stock prices fell as speculation disappointed over October unfilled orders for United States Steel Corp and Rock Island dividend delays. The market, weakened by a reduced short position, faces renewed bear pressure with call money at 4 1 2 percent.

Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Salyards and daughter Geraldine of Keyser West Virginia, guests of relatives here, departed today for Broadwyn Virginia to visit relatives before proceeding to Middletown for more time with family.
A four annual Handley Schools exhibition in Winchester drew a large crowd of grades 6 to 12 parents and friends last night. Officials from the Handley board council and School Board attended to observe the program and the students work. The event featured art work apple exhibit by the Lup ton School of Horticulture, posters by Miss Pani and a one hour program in the Auditorium including songs health playlets and choral and physical education demonstrations. Impressive Kiwanis Club tasks highlighted by John Glaize Miss Sullivan Miss Lupton and Miss Caldwell.
The American Legion Auxiliary hosts a bazaar at the model house of J. W. Rosenberger and Company at 709 South Washington Street. Open for tea at 3 pm and supper 6 to 8 pm, proceeds fund veterans in government hospitals. Furniture fixtures and even the house are for sale.
All members of the Friendship Fire Co. No. 1 are asked to meet at the hall tomorrow at 10 o'clock to participate in the Armistice Day parade.
George Hensell a 26 year old Northern Virginia Power Company worker was fatally injured when a toppling pole while he was lashed to it fell into the roadway on Millwood Ave. His injuries included fractured jaw skull and suspected hip and leg fractures though a wood splinter pierced his cheeks. He was taken to Memorial Hospital where doctors say his condition is grave and unlikely to improve. The city widening project required shifting light poles along the street.
The Handley Library will close on Armistice Day in line with the American Legion appeal and the Virginia governor's proclamation. Books due November 11 may be returned the next day without fines, the librarian announced.
Albert B. Fall and Edward L. Doheny pled not guilty in the District of Columbia Supreme Court to charges of conspiracy to defraud the government over the Elk Hill naval oil lease. The historic case involves Harding era officials and California oil interests.

Luther Jenkins Ray Jenkins and Irvin Coates faced liquor possession charges after police found a pint in a garage toilet basin. A jail doctor noted peppermint breath on Coates masking liquor odor, while the other two showed no odor. Sheriff Pannett observed Coates intoxicated earlier, and Judge Weems reserved ruling, later dismissing the defendants. Coates faced existing sentences for DUI and bails set.
Special Armistice Day services arranged for tomorrow at Brad dock Street Methodist Episcopal Church South. The hour long program includes Col Bryan Conrad speaking on Wear Reminiscences and Capt John H Rosenberger on The Establishment of Peace. American Legion members and veterans invited.
The Rev J C Hooks announces preaching services Sunday November 14 on Frederick circuit Lamps 11 am Paxton 3 pm and Round Hill 7 30 pm A protracted meeting begins Sunday evening at Round Hill with Rev W O Luttrell preaching each night during the coming week He has a reputation as a successful evangelist The pastor hopes for cooperation of all Christian people in the community.
Winchester chapter of the W C T U holds a social meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Lup ton 132 North Washington street on Friday November 12 at 8 o'clock. Members and friends are urged to attend for an enjoyable program and refreshments.

Ex service men and guests will join Armistice Day activities in Martinsburg with a 6 p.m. George Washington Hotel ball and a 6:30 a.m. service at Braddock Street Church. A matinee at Handley High features the Berkeley Post squad versus R Y Conrad team, and the Colonial hosts the film Men of Purpose as a fundraiser.
The store of Mrs. Leo Miller near town was broken into Monday night. About $4 and some goods were taken after a rear door was forced. Her residence nearby was entered the same night but nothing was reported missing. Authorities were notified. no suspect has been found.
