Suffolk Nansemond merger vote approved to form new city

Voters in Suffolk and Nansemond County approved a merger forming the city of Suffolk effective January 1, 1974. The tally was 9 141 in favor to 2 925 against with strong support in both areas. The new city will cover 430 square miles and house about 45 000 residents. Nansemond County lies in Tidewater near Chesapeake and Virginia Beach.
