The Warren County treasurer and bank board chairman Mr Warthen killed himself after an accountant from the state conducted a recent examination of the treasurer’s books. Captain Hayley Recalls World War I Service
Liverpool born Captain J P Hayley, a Winchester resident and apple firm representative, told the local Rotary Club about his World War I experiences. He joined in 1915, served in the machine gun corps, saw major engagements, moved to infantry, became a captain, was captured in early 1918 and held in a German camp with poor meals before release on Christmas morning 1918.

In Front Royal Virginia before daybreak two unmasked men robbed the Motor Inn cashier Homer Peffer of 12 dollars then forced him into a Chevrolet and drove away. They halted near Nineveh and took his remaining money about 4 dollars before dumping him. He was returned by a passing truck. Police scoured the Front Royal Winchester road but the bandits, described as roughly dressed in overalls, left no license plate information.
