The Supreme Court refused to grant a hearing to white parents in New York City challenging a school board pupil assignment plan aimed at creating racial balance. The parents argued the plan forced children to travel to distant neighborhood schools, imposing hardship and limiting freedom of choice. Continued on Page 2.
The Rescue Squad lowers its flag to half mast in memory of Rep Herbert C Bonner Democrat of North Carolina who died yesterday. He is known as the father of the nuclear ship Savannah. Also noted in FRIDAY's Town Crier 15 Angus cattle wandered from a farm on Red Bud Road before owners Ralph Wakeman and Ste City learned of their loss.

Nine people were injured in Winchester area crashes over the weekend. Three were admitted to Winchester Memorial Hospital in good condition. Details include injuries to Lawson S. Triplett Jr., 30, Mt. Falls. Dottie Baker, 21, Slanesville. Ralph Welsh, 48, Purcell Avenue. George Everett, 49, Box 298, charged with reckless driving. and Anna Mae Myers of Martinsburg who felt chest pains at 12 30 p m Saturday.
The Frederick County Board of Supervisors gave final approval to 73 lots in the Green Acres Subdivision pending Highway Dept. approval. The meeting also approved buying two new venetian blinds for the sheriff's office and allotted 30 to R. V. Martin for the loss of six lambs attributed to dogs. Rabies clinic plans were discussed for early December for unvaccinated dogs.
The Frederick County Supervisors chose to rent health facilities from the City of Winchester instead of sharing building costs. They approved a $900 annual rent for 25 years with potential increases if the city's share exceeds $45,000 on the $100,000 Public Health Building. Hill-Burton funds are expected to contribute $55,000, and the board agreed to pay half of the improvement costs upon city and county approval.
President Johnson signed a 32.6 billion education bill at Southwest Texas State College promising 140,000 more students will enter college next year with federal aid. The act creates grants from 200 to 1000 dollars and aims to open higher education to any high school graduate regardless of family wealth. U S pilots report smashing a missile site 60 miles east of Hanoi as paratroopers of the 173rd Airborne engage a main Viet Cong force 25 miles north of Saigon. U S losses include five planes. 110 Viet Cong killed and 71 confirmed dead in another battle near Ple Me.
