Eisenhower Dedicates New Atomic Energy Commission Building
President Eisenhower dedicates the new AEC headquarters in Germantown Maryland a five story reinforced concrete facility designed to withstand nuclear blasts. The $13.3 million building includes an underground bomb shelter for 1800 workers and 24 miles of corridors with 1500 windows. Six lines of blast protection and a roof hose attachment for fallout cleanup are featured.

The nation's First Lady Mrs Dwight D. Eisenhower visited Winchester yesterday with her sister and Mrs John Eisenhower. They arrived around 2 pm in two cars with aides and possibly Secret Service personnel. A 45 minute stop at W. B. Snider Sons on N. Cameron St included autographs for two daughters and sampling candy. Mrs Eisenhower purchased brassions? for her daughter in law and Mrs John Eisenhower bought a round top table.

John Kater Wins Annual Voice of Democracy Contest
John Kater, son of Mr. and Mrs John L. Kater and a senior at Handley High School, won the annual Voice of Democracy contest. The Winchester Chamber of Commerce sponsors the event with six high school entrants delivering five minute speeches on I Speak for Democracy. Brunhild Kendzious of James Wood took second and Richard Rewis of Hander third. other contenders were Gayle Crabill, Ruth Ann Potts, and Ellen Eschell. Judges were Major Horsefield, Phil Whitney, and James Hutton. The winners and Mrs. Ray Garrabrandt will be guests at the next JCC dinner. Prizes include 25, 15, 10 dollars and 15 to Mrs. Garrabrandt. Kater’s talk will enter the regional contest in Alexandria November 25, with regional winners advancing to a national contest offering four $500 college scholarships.
