Americans flock to polls in key states to decide the next two years of Congress and choose governors in 35 states as voting continues across the nation. High turnout marks a pivotal election day with races shaping national leadership and policy direction.
India plans to pull back its 5700-strong U.N. Congo brigade and unsure about the 1250-strong Gaza unit as it fights Chinese incursions on 2000 square miles of border. Spokesman said withdrawal talks with U.N. leaders are underway while villagers will be trained to shoot.
Deputy Premier Alexei Kosygin defends Cuba rocket withdrawal as a concession to common sense and pledges Soviet aid to Cuban sovereignty. He argues peaceful coexistence is a Leninist principle and urges immediate negotiations to resolve the Cuban crisis. He blames US militarism for the crisis and says negotiations continue.
The Gown Crier notes late campaign pranks as Marsh backer posters appear at Cork and Stewart streets while Robinson posters are vandalized with black cloth and flowers. Winchester Civil Defense coordinator Boyd McDonald asked residents to offer extra space for officials in a national emergency. Contacts were requested via 662 9003, with meetings to be arranged through local officials. McDonald and William Allison were named CD coordinators last week.
Street lights failed in downtown Winchester for four hours as a circuit short at a fixture on Rouss Ave. blocked illumination. Northern Virginia Power Co. workers traced the fault through the circuit and restored power about midnight.
Fire swept two Rockingham County landmarks near Harrisonburg yesterday. An old time country store at Lilly eight miles west was owned by Marvin G. Arey. A pre Civil War dwelling near Lacey Springs eight miles north belonged to Charles R. Allebaugh. Cause of the blazes was not learned.
Washington reports say the Soviet Union was still assembling IL-28 jet bombers in Cuba last week but a strong U.S. warning appears to have halted work. Surveillance flights are expected to confirm whether the planes are being drawn down as Khrushchev agreed to remove offensive weapons from Cuba.
In the California governor contest between Edmund G. Brown and Richard M. Nixon, up to five million voters were expected to cast ballots. Nixon, appealing from Los Angeles, denied seeking the White House and defended his record while Brown contrasted him with charges of misconduct, insisting he has no evidence.
A national vote determines whether Kennedy can claim a bigger Democratic majority in Congress. Democrats hold 61 Senate seats with 39 up for election and 218 seats needed for a House majority. Predictions vary on gains and losses, with late counts possible in Far Western states and California potentially decisive. Officers include Smithy Pugh vice president F T Bigert secretary Lyndal Anderson assistant secretary and others.
Voters in Winchester area cast 1411 ballots by noon for congressman and three constitutional amendments amid heavy turnout. 11 a.m. totals show Waynesboro 1093 and Staunton 1624. Local candidates Marsh and Robinson urged voting with results expected later.
Area election returns will be tabulated unofficially at The Star office this evening. Officials in Winchester Frederick and Clarke Counties are asked to telephone the results as soon as the votes are counted. The Star would appreciate officials calling in the Marsh Robinson returns as soon as possible.
