The Chamber of Commerce notes eight coal cars received in ten days and distributed widely. The movement to use wood where possible has grown. A local coal dealer promised shipments by the Fuel Administration.
A local appeal urges Winchester residents to substitute wood for coal to ease the nation’s fuel shortage. Frederick County sections are asked to bring in wood for sale at a reasonable price, with a guaranteed market for all hauled wood.
Local fuel scene shows relief as six cars of soft coal and two cars of hard coal reach Winchester. The special chamber committee and national fuel administration discuss steps to ease shortages with Dr Garfields office to host a third conference tomorrow. Rev. F. M. Richardson, pastor of Braddock Street Methodist Episcopal Church, South, left yesterday afternoon for Hot Springs Virginia to join friends for a week of hunting. He knows the region well as his old homeplace and plans to hunt bears and deer, though deer killing is forbidden in the county.

In circuit court Judge F B Whiting heard arguments in the divorce suit between H Eugene Ritter and Mrs Blanch Ritter. He was previously convicted of shooting his wife in the hand. Testimony had been taken as both spouses seek divorce with counsel R Gray Williams for Mrs Ritter and Hon R Isoe and Harry R Kern for Mr Ritter.

An immense Winchester Freder ick audience heard Westmoreland Davis, Loudoun county native, vow to enforce all laws including statewide prohibition. Judge Harrison urged voters to back Davis and the Democratic ticket as city leaders and supporters looked on.
An unusual two night event features Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress and Parsifal at the Winchester District Norges Association hall. Colonel Frederick Ray will lecture as the films unfold with Miss Frances Ray providing incidental music. The 4000 foot film cost $58,000 and merges lecture, motion picture, pipe organ and singing. Tickets are 36 cents for one night and 50 cents for both nights.
Washington November 6 road administrator Hoover says the full power of his bureau will be used to protect farmers from high 1918 seed prices. The license bureau will curb speculators and those charging excessive prices will be dealt with severely as records show seed stocks on hand should keep prices reasonable.
The United States and Japan reaffirmed the open door in China and pledged to oppose any government pursuit of special rights. Notes exchanged between Viscount Ishii and Secretary Lansing announced mutual cooperation to suppress Prussian militarism and to oppose discrimination in China trade. Details of naval cooperation were not disclosed. This follows Ishii’s Washington visit and dates dated November 2.
Voters in Winchester show signs of a two thirds turnout in the state ticket race with about half the county voting by three o clock. Local Democrats back Westmoreland Davis for governor and list treasurer William T Barr commissioner J L Maphis commonwealth attorney James P Beardon and city sergeant Adam Forney as slate. If two thirds of registered voters cast ballots it signals a strong local result amid minimal opposition to Democratic candidates.
Officials of the Hope Gas and Oil Company report their Hastings West Virginia gasoline plant burned after an explosion early today. The loss is estimated at $1,000,000. Three men were slightly injured in the incident, described as purely accidental.
