In Michigan the candidates race toward Election Day in a near dead heat. Gerald Ford campaigns in Ohio before a Grand Rapids home rally while Jimmy Carter finishes a two year bid with stops in California.
Polls open at 6 and close at 7 p m as area voters head to the polls for a presidential contest with Ford and Carter in a tight race. The ballot includes six constitutional amendments and local issues in Winchester and Warren counties with races for clerk, treasurer and liquor by the drink on the line.
George Gallup reports a near tie for the presidential race with Ford and Carter separated by one percentage point in the final Gallup poll. The survey notes undecided voters and the usual allocation of those votes when undecided.
In Virginia the 1976 race pits Ford against Carter for president as voters weigh which candidate best preserves the Old Dominion's 12 electoral votes. Voter registration surged by over 300,000, boosting rolls to 2.1 million, with turnout potentially higher than 1972. Byrd Jr seeks re election to the Senate, facing Zumwalt and Perper as Byrd leads polls.
Clarke County Courthouse turned into a post campaign celebration site with red white and blue decor bands and instruments outside on the porch. Senator Harry Byrd arrived at six o clock to a receiving line as Jack Hardesty opened remarks and soprano Susan Hudson sang patriotic tunes before Byrd spoke and attendees sang God Bless America.
On the eve of voting, Sen. Harry Byrd Jr. predicted reelection as Elmo Zumwalt and Martin Perper pressed last minute pleas. Zumwalt assailed Byrd’s record, Perper attacked campaign ads as racist, and Byrd touted carrying all Virginia districts including Northern Virginia and Tidewater.
The Acme Supermarket on Valley Avenue was gutted in a spectacular fire Saturday night. Authorities say there is no reason to believe the blaze was arson or intentional. Byrd ends reelection bid at Clarke County Courthouse in Berryville. Wire from Warren covers county treasurer election.
