Hijackers Change Demands In Aruba Airliner Incident
The Colombian hijackers dropped their demand to free 140 political prisoners but raised the ransom from 200000 to 400000 dollars. The four engine Electra, from Cali to Medellin, landed in Aruba after oil dwindled, freeing 33 women and children and leaving 56 aboard with the hijackers. The manned plane, hijacked Wednesday, carried 85 passengers and five crew. Police and government officials watched as Colombia sought to resolve the crisis, while the hijackers threatened to blow up the aircraft if their terms were not met. The incident followed a prior attempted hijack foiled by Capt. Jorge Lucena two years ago.
