President Nixon arrived in Warsaw to meet Polish leader Edward Gierek and discuss trade and economic aid as his 24 hour Tehran state visit closes. The White House said Tehran bombings were not aimed at the President during the Iran trip.
President Nixon will speak to a joint session of Congress in the House chamber at 9 30 p m EDT Thursday night after returning from Moscow. Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield urged the address and leaders announced nationwide radio and television coverage.
After two days abroad the Nixons fly to Washington and plan a conference with Poland's Gierek. Rogers and Olszowski sign a bilateral consular accord granting greater embassy protection to U S citizens arrested in Poland.
A series of explosions in Tehran delayed President Nixon's visit by 45 minutes, badly injuring Brig. Gen. Harold L. Price and killing an Iranian woman near the tomb of Reza Shah. A Pepsi-Cola plant and the U.S. Information Service building were also damaged as Iran's Marxist guerrillas claimed responsibility. Nixon continued the tomb ceremony despite the blasts.
Gov Linwood Holton announced plans to appoint Richard H Poff to the Virginia Supreme Court by August 28. The move makes Poff the first Republican on the court this century and requires legislative confirmation.
Tom Golden a 29 year old New Yorker living in Israel described waiting for his sister at Lod International Airport when terrorists killed 25 people and wounded more than 70. He provides his eyewitness account of the attack by Japanese terrorists working for the Arabs.
The first municipal reclamation centers serving Winchester will open tomorrow at three Grand Union locations and an A and P on Amherst Street. Volunteers led by Mrs. Louise Speakman initiate the six month trial with containers donated by Jim Wilson of Kwick Klean Refuse Co. Inc. The city may fund ongoing operation at $50 monthly per container if successful.
The Frederick County Board of Supervisors will shift meetings on June 14 from the Clerk's Office to the A&N Building at Nine Court Square. The renovated building houses the new board room on the second floor and offices for Roger Alderman and other county departments, with a reception on the street floor. The former board room will provide expansion space as county offices consolidate onto county property.
Governor Linwood Holton announced improvements to the free hospitalization plan for state employees set to take effect July 1. The changes aim to address complaints, expanding coverage originally criticized as limited to the employee only and not family members.
U S Navy pilots using television guided bombs targeted Vinh a major coastal city between Hanoi and the DMZ. They hit the Tho Tuong railroad bridge southwest of Vinh and reported destroying tracks and a highway bridge. North Vietnamese lines faced heavy bombardment while regional fronts remained quiet aside from Kontum.
