A Navy serviceman assigned to routine duties attempted to sell highly sensitive information to the Soviets. The Navy tightened security around such work as the Office of Naval Intelligence warned commanders about risks in current clearance practices. A copperhead was seen twice coiled near Mrs. Ford Luttrell at 834 Amherst St as she stepped outside to her cistern. Elsewhere neighbors on Kinzel Drive heard radio chatter during a day of window washing and car traffic. Pasadena California AP Surveyor 1 moved toward a new landing site on the moon after a tricky steering maneuver 97 000 miles out in space. Officials at Jet Propulsion Laboratory said the 200 pound camera carrying craft responded to commands and the new path should land about 20 miles north of the prior target in the Sea of Storms on a 62 mile diameter zone at the western edge of the equatorial landing strip. The mission mirrors Luna 9 as a pioneer of a slow descent using thrust to gently place the craft on the airless surface with a roll and yaw maneuver and short rocket burn to push the craft forward toward its new direction.
The Associated Press reports a record Memorial Day death toll on U S highways with 519 lives lost by Monday midnight after a 78 hour period starting Friday. Police and motorists faced drowning and beatings incidents including ten drowning victims in South Carolina.
Rainfall for May reached 1.66 inches aided by a lightning filled storm Saturday night. A 0.41 inch reading occurred at the Winchester Fruit Research Laboratory while May total remains 2.02 inches below the 53 year average of 3.68. Year to date through May sits near average at 14.27 inches versus 14.52 inches. April's 4.50 inches topped the 3.14 inch norm, the wettest April since 1961.
Richmond police charged 19 year old Thomas Lee Penn with four counts of murder in slayings across the area and said two more charges would be filed. Penn gave himself up at police headquarters after arrest in connection with a 14 year old girl's assault. The victims include Addison E. Wilkins and Malcolm L. Norment, alongside Cynthia Johnson and Moses Leon Spencer. Penn and his brother William face additional charges in Brunswick County.
A 42 year old mother of eight Priscilla C Cushing of Norwell Massachusetts died at Winchester Memorial Hospital after injuries from multiple auto crashes left 14 others injured. Her death followed a collision in the early hours disappearing details.
Shenandoah College and Shenandoah Conservatory of Music marked their 91st annual commencement on Sunday at 3 p m. Thirty eight graduates earned certificates diplomas and degrees including one Doctor of Music and a Doctor of Humane Letters. A separate road collision on Route 50 near Gore left several injured including William McDonald Ruby McDonald and Linda Wright. Trooper G N Jenkins and local police reported details of the crash and injuries.
Cape Kennedy Florida AP The Gemini 9 spacemen prepare for a three day space test with Commander Eugene Cernan and Lt Col Thomas Stafford to chase a target satellite and dock Gemini 9 to an ATDA aboard a Titan Atlas launch. They aim for a 12 38 p.m. Wednesday liftoff and an 185 mile orbit.
