Survivors report Arab nationalist rebels massacred most of La Melouza village males near Algiers. French officials tally 302 dead with women wounded and homes burned. Rebels from MNA and FLN suspected. attackers used submachine guns and axes. Helicopter aid delivered as grim toll rises.
Washington reported a new strain in U S Britain ties as Britain moved to cut trade controls with Communist China. U S officials said Congress criticism would shape the impact as Sen Knowland and Sen Fulbright criticized the move amid Memorial Day recess. The State Department reaffirmed a total embargo on American trade with China.
Scores of about 2,000 attendees at the 17th annual Servian Orthodox monastery picnic near Libertyville were treated for suspected food poisoning. At least 67 were hospitalized in Waukegan Highland Park and Libertyville with about 40 kept for observation. Officials cited suspect roast lamb along with pork and imported cheese as possible causes.
The Common Council gave tentative approval to an ordinance aligning city speed limits with state provisions. Key limits include 15 mph near schools during recess, 25 mph in business and residential districts, and 35 mph on selected streets such as Millwood and Berryville Aves. The measure, introduced by H. W. Butler Jr., awaits third reading on June 11.
Mrs. Dalton LeMasurier survived 19 days on Ferris Mountain after a plane crash near Rawlins Wyoming. She ended up beside her husband’s body, aided by storms, limited food, and a lone rescue party. The couple’s light plane went down May 11, fuel exploded, fire burned, and she wore her husband’s clothes. her husband died days earlier.
The 30 hour Memorial Day period yielded two traffic fatalities in Virginia. Arlington man Walter B. Herrity, 48, died after his car struck a bridge abutment on U.S. 1 near Tri Angle. Paul J. Dougherty, 43, injured, and another passenger hospitalized. Richmonder Charles Edwin Ramsey, 31, died after leaping from a runaway dump truck. a second passenger, Wilfred Burton, 20, escaped uninjured as the truck hit a light pole and toppled. Virginia’s highway toll reached 292 for the year, 27 below the previous year.
Mayors from 11 Richmonds including England’s have accepted invitations to attend in Richmond June 8 9 for the 350th anniversary celebration. Mayor F Henry Garber said acceptances come from Richmonds in England Indiana Kansas Missouri Ohio Texas Rhode Island Michigan Maine Massachusetts and Utah. Dr Everett R Clinchy NC CJ president will speak at the June 9 program.
Beirut police and soldiers guarded key sites while armored cars patrolled the capital after violent clashes. Eight rioters died, about 70 injured, and over 200 arrested as the army dispersed opponents. Government says elections start June 9 with army supervision. Opposition leaders press for protests and accountability for officials.
Playwright Arthur Miller, husband of Marilyn Monroe, is found guilty of contempt of Congress after a six day trial by Judge Charles McLaughlin. Miller refused to name other Communist writers at HUAC hearings, defending his conscience while answering his own questions. Sentencing date not set. maximum penalty is one year in jail and $1,000 fine.
A Senate special committee urged tighter disclosure on lobbying and campaign financing to curb evils in both areas. The measure would criminalize some filing failures, require fuller campaign reports, and cap individual contributions, while splitting on applying reforms to primaries.
In Montgomery a white jury acquitted Raymond Britt Jr. and Sonny Livingston Jr. of dynamiting a Black church, despite prosecutor warnings of potential race riots. The trial focused on the Hutchinson Street Baptist Church incident and could affect related trials of two more suspects.
More than 5,000 students at the University of Illinois participated in a campus riot on Memorial Day that required eight hours and over 200 police to quell. At least two coeds injured and 50 students jailed, as tear gas volleys and water jug buckets marked the clash. National Safety Council data show 11 250 traffic fatalities January to April 1957, down 3 percent from 11 560 in the same period of 1956. April totals match 1956 at 2 930, with 29 states down, 17 up, and 2 unchanged. Massachusetts leads with a 30 percent drop, Idaho 28, and Nebraska 20.

U S diplomats seek confirmation that two 20 year old South Carolina college students Michael A Gilbert of Walterboro and Warren W Hair of North Augusta vanished on a hitchhiking tour in Western Europe and crossed into Communist Hungary. An Austrian patrolman saw what he believed were the Americans escorted from the Margareth frontier barrier as an Australian acquaintance raised alarm. If verified, officials will ask Budapest to query the Hungarian government about their disappearance.
