A four engine DC-4 aircraft of Eastern Airlines crashed near Port Deposit Maryland killing all 53 aboard including 49 passengers and four crew. Eyewitnesses reported a midair explosion and the craft plunging into Whittaker's Barrens near the Susquehanna River. Rescue crews reached the scene after dusk and recovery began beneath a three hour blaze as investigators from the CAB and local authorities began the formal inquiry into the cause.
