Hodges Building Razed for Post Office Addition

The Elmer V. Hodges house on North Braddock Street was torn down today by workmen to make way for an addition to the post office at Braddock and Piccadilly. A steam shovel will begin Monday to dig about 1 200 cubic yards for the new foundation. Wood Construction Company of Roanoke holds the $40 500 contract and will pay unskilled labor the local 40 cent per hour wage. skilled labor wages are being negotiated after NRA results.

Water rate hike limited by federal grant plan for Winchester

Winchester plans a new water supply with a 23 cent per thousand gallon rise starting 1938, contingent on a 45 percent federal grant through the Public Works Administration. Five Children Die In Alderwood House Fire

TORONTO May 31 Five of the six Scott children died when a frame house in Alderwood suburb burned in the early hours. The ages ranged from 15 months to 19 years. The father leaped from a second story window and the mother saved an infant before leaping to safety. The fire started in an unknown manner and engulfed the sleeping family.

Twenty Men to Begin Beautification Project on Northwestern Grade

Twenty men in two crews will start beautification work Monday on the Northwestern Grade. The five mile stretch west of the corporate limits, previously completed May 15, will be revived with shrubbery, shoulder sloping, and grass planting, funded by the State Highway Department under the direction of resident highway engineer G. School Board Names Half Of Co Teachers In Special Meeting

Frederick county school board appointed about half of the teachers for next session at a special meeting. Assignments to schools were not yet named as decisions hinge on which Gainesboro district one and two room schools will close for the new consolidated building between Gainesboro and Cross Junction. The building is aimed to be ready for fall opening with sand and brick being hauled to the site. Excavation and foundation work may rely on relief labor to cut county costs.

Night Telephone Rates Cut to Start at 7 P M in Virginia

New night rates for out of town calls in Virginia drop the start time from 8 30 p m to 7 p m and run from 7 p m to 4 30 a m effective June 1. Nearly a score of Winchester Lions club members are at Ocean View for the Virginia district convention opening today and running through tomorrow evening. Attendees include Dr. C. R.
