Appeals Court Rules on Pregnant Teacher Contract
The 4th U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled a school district cannot withhold renewal from a pregnant teacher unless it proves business necessity. Ann Mitchell, a Spanish teacher in Pickens County South Carolina, faced nonrenewal after revealing her pregnancy. The court urged the district to show justification or bias due to pregnancy and sent the case back for lower court consideration.
