Memorial Day services at National Cemetery and Shenandoah Memorial Park remembered the nation’s war dead with rifle salutes and flags. Congressman John O Marsh Jr urged leadership and vigilance as veterans groups and local officials paid tribute and reflected on freedom’s cost.
Maude Ford of Route 1 urged the Town Crier to extend dog like protection to cats. She called for cat registration with a small fee and filing of pictures. Forecast warns of a cool night with upper 40s to 50s, cloudy and rainy conditions, then clearing and warmer by Monday.
Mrs. Kennedy on a CBS tribute program recalled John F. Kennedy's belief that people should try to right wrongs and make a difference. She spoke from Hyannis Port with Robert F. Kennedy and others joining from Dublin London and West Berlin during the half hour broadcast.
In Midlothian Virginia six Miller children aged 2 to 11 perished when a two story frame home burned. Parents and three older siblings were treated for minor injuries. Fire Chief Barfield said five bodies lay in a first floor room and the sixth on the second floor as rescuers fought the blaze until about 4 a.m.
Memorial Day ceremonies across the United States honored fallen soldiers. Taps sounded and rifle salutes accompanied wreaths at sites including Arlington Cemetery where Air Force Secretary Eugene M. Zuckert placed a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns. New York held parades in Manhattan, the Bronx and Brooklyn, while Portsmouth New Hampshire marked the Thresher bells memorial at the naval shipyard.
Virginia residents set clocks forward one hour to begin Daylight Saving Time at 12:01 a.m. tomorrow. The time shifts back to Eastern Standard Time on Sunday Sept. 6.
Pat's Cab announces Sunday closing at 1 p.m. and will remain closed until further notice. The change affects all services for the foreseeable future and staff scheduling adjustments are expected.

In Aberdeen South Carolina the Fischer quintuplets birth was entered as the 75th authenticated case in medical archives. Drs Bersbos King and Janusz published the Sept 14 report in the Journal of the American Medical Association noting quintuple pregnancies occur about once in 15 to 20 million births and US incidence near one in eight million.
At the start of the 48th Indianapolis 500 Eddie Sachs of Detroit died on arrival at Speedway Hospital and rookie Dave MacDonald of Riverside Calif. was in critical condition after a flaming crash. Also injured were Bobby Unser Norm Hall Johnny Rutherford and Ronnie Duman. Unser suffered minor burns and escaped the flames. The crash halted racing for about half an hour before a restart. Sachs, 37, had been a veteran of Memorial Day classics and was critical of track officials after last year’s race.
San Francisco AP Rockefeller says he is qualified to press the H bomb button but prefers peaceful atomic uses. Goldwater accuses Rockefeller of being a Johnson stand in and slams his campaign tactics as divisive in California amid last minute campaigning in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.
Lyndon B. Johnson returns to his Texas high school now named after him. He recalls leaving with empty pockets and says every aspirant should begin where they started. The 1,200 crowd at the steamy gym hears that events afar affect their town of Johnson City.
East German Communist boss Walter Ulbricht has begun a 15 day visit to the Soviet Union and hinted at possible moves on Berlin German issues. He praised Soviet coexistence policy and said the German problem must be solved by the two German states. Western observers speculate on new East West Germany talks or a separate peace treaty with East Germany affecting access routes to West Berlin. Khrushchev has threatened such a treaty in the past.
Tung Chih ping a young Red Chinese diplomat asked political asylum at the U S Embassy after arriving in Burundi to take up a post. State Department officials confirmed he is likely the highest ranking Beijing diplomat to defect. Burundi’s capital Bujumture hosts a small five man embassy staff once administered by Belgium.
AP reports sunny skies and light winds across Virginia today as a low pressure system from Texas approaches, bringing rain expected for the Old Dominion by Sunday. Dairy Corner is on Route 7 east of city limits.
