A Memorial Day portrait recalls 602000 Americans fallen since 4th of July past battles from Lexington to Normandy. It notes 36 US deaths in Viet Nam in 20 years and lists major wars death tolls. it reflects on Arlington and local cemeteries, veterans living and memory across conflicts.
The Winchester City Council unanimously approved leasing Winchester Municipal Airport to Frank Marshall of Air port Management Inc of Manassas Va for five years starting June 1. Marshall cited as experienced airport operator and comes highly recommended by the State Corporation Commission after comparisons with Friendship Airport in Baltimore.
Marshall, president of Air port, Mana Inc, says the town and businesses show strong support for an airport project. He believes close town involvement can yield mutual benefits and notes the venture would only proceed if substantial potential is clear. Born in West Virginia, he calls himself a Virginian and has four children.
Three centennial parades are scheduled in nearby areas over the next two months. Jefferson County’s Ramey chairs a 7 p.m. Saturday parade in Charles Town. Martinsburg-Berkeley County plans a June 22 week of events highlighted by a June 29 1:30 p.m. Grand Feature Parade. Berkeley Springs hosts Morgan County’s July 6 parade at 3 p.m. Martinsburg in nearby WV prepares a state centennial pageant and parade with 35 floats and three high school performances on June 27 38 and 2%.
Rear Adm. James R. Dudley addressed about 100 at National Cemetery urging honor through tolerance for others and fairness to all. Gerald Goodman of the Veterans Council introduced him, with Mayor Smalts and clergymen present as wreaths and taps marked the service. Music by the Navy School of Music Band accompanied the observance.
In Waynesboro a Fishburn Military School senior Bruce White Hensley 18 son of Mr and Mrs L A Hensley of Olympia Pa was found dead in his room at about 10 15 am by a roommate. A medical examiner Dr Harvey B Ryder ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Vatican reports the 81 year old Pope John XXIII stopped bleeding and rallied overnight with signs the crisis passed. Doctors held two examinations and Vatican officials expected a continued recovery as messages of goodwill arrived worldwide.
A three vehicle wreck on U S 1 north of Golansville Caroline County Virginia claimed the state’s first Memorial Day traffic death for 1963. Peter D Evans 22 of Hing ham MA was killed instantly. The toll for the holiday period rose to 350 with 316 a year earlier.
President Kennedy got a message from the ailing Pope John XXIII thanking him for his concern over the Pope’s illness. The White House did not release texts of either message. a spokesman said the Pope appreciated the President’s concern.
In Jackson Mississippi NAACP leaders vow expanded peaceful protests despite police intent on quick arrests. Demonstrations on Capitol Street draw thousands as white counterdemonstrators confront pickets.
The NAACP-led demonstrations in North Philadelphia over a $6 million school project turned violent as police clashed with as many as 500 pickets. Ten people were injured while labor unions and nonwhite workers were at odds. NAACP leaders pledged nationwide actions in major cities. Negro ministers joined the protest and urged a large rally to be held Monday.
Dr Wallace E Howell of W E Howell Associates comments on hail suppression in the Blue Ridge area. The Appalachian program uses silver iodide seeding from Martinsburg and Cumberland to reduce fruit damage. Critics accuse cloud seeding of diverting rain and provoking drought concerns. Howell notes opinions vary and that seeding may raise rainfall in Mercersburg area compared with prior years.
Clarke County residents observe Memorial Day as crowds honor servicemen while five Clarke County individuals were jailed by noon after a morning incident. Reports note a patrol at 6 a.m. with multiple detentions as the event unfolded across the town.
