A new wave of Freedom Riders departed New Orleans by train, the first to use railway transport in their campaign against Mississippi segregation laws. The group began its journey on the Illinois Central line.
State Sen. Mills E. Godwin Jr addressed 200 bankers at the Stonewall Jackson Chapter of the American Institute of Bankers warning that government spending must match revenue. He urged Virginians to value thrift and sacrifice, citing danger in promises of a living from the state and noting his past roles and affiliations.
Memorial Day began in 1868 when Gen John A Logan ordered decoration of graves. The observance now honors the dead of all wars. A Winchester lab notes cold weather slows plant growth and creates conditions for beetles, recommending DDT or malathion spray. Mrs Julia Beavers seeks help making rose petal beads.
Eight demonstrators four whites and four Negroes arrived by train in Jackson Mississippi and entered the white waiting room at Illinois Central Station. Police Captain J L Ray ordered them to move on at the entrance and again at the exit door. They refused and were placed under arrest and taken to the jail within minutes.
Attorney General Kennedy asks the Interstate Commerce Commission to require conspicuous notices and facilities banishing racial discrimination in all interstate bus travel. He cites past rulings and urges the ICC to declare that Negro passengers may travel anywhere in the nation as equals, with enforcement across terminals and related services.
Chief J Thomas Boyd announced that a city owned cannon cemetery monuments and other targets painted yellow last week have been cleared. He expects a meeting with Dabney Watts and Joseph Massie Jr to decide next steps and not disclose names until procedures are set. More than one person is involved. The vandalism included the Confederate statue, court house doors, War Memorial Building pavement, and street pavement near Peoples Drug Store.
The Memorial Day weekend death toll on U S highways neared a record as traffic crashes averaged about one every 15 minutes since Friday 6 p m. The National Safety Council and police urged extreme caution amid expected heavy travel home.
Gen Lemuel C Shepherd Jr ret urged rededication to the principles for which war dead gave their lives during Memorial Day ceremonies at National Cemetery. He warned against Communist aims and urged veterans to uphold duties, praising the fallen and noting their sacrifices. The event featured VFW firing squads, a wreath, and remarks by local clergy and officials.
A four engine Venezuelan airliner carrying 62 aboard crashed four minutes after takeoff from Lisbon. Rescue efforts began at dawn as weather hindered search and officials confirmed loss of the jet with passengers from Venezuela Portugal Spain and possibly Italy and France aboard bound for Venezuela and Curacao.
President Kennedy flies to Paris tonight to meet French President Charles de Gaulle and then proceed to Vienna for talks with Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. He marked his 44th birthday with a Boston rally praising freedom and vowing firm resolve against miscalculations by adversaries.
A motorcyclist named Gordon Keehr, 28, of Rt 1, lost his right foot and lower calf after his bike struck a station wagon backing from a private driveway on Rt 645, about a mile south of Winchester. Me State Trooper Stanley L. Lee said Keehr, associated with a local cycle shop, was trawling west when the collision occurred. Donna Judy Zirk of Rea was said to be driving the Plymouth station wagon.
At Indianapolis Motor Speedway a wreck occurred on the main straightaway during the race. Rookie Don Davis collided with the outside wall causing a pileup that blocked most of the track. Davis and several others including Jack Turner and A. J. Shepherd escaped with varying injuries. Turner flipped three times and was taken to the track hospital but found uninjured.
In New Orleans segregationists plan picketing at two public schools that faced violence last fall when black students first attended alongside white pupils. Both schools have largely boycotted since the incident and organizers, led by Armand Davie of the Ninth Ward Private School Association, did not specify dates.
