Mauri Rose Leads Early As Indy 500 Delays Fire

In the Indianapolis 500 delay caused by a garage fire, Mauri Rose led at 100 miles before carburetor trouble sidelined him at 152 miles and he later returned as Floyd Davis’s relief driver. Wilbur Shaw moved up to the overall lead by 200 miles as Rex Mays trailed.

Showers Break Heat and Drought Slightly in May

Showers since last evening brought .55 inch of rain, lifting May total to 1.98 inches but far from normal. Ground remains dry below the surface and farmers seek longer, heavier rains. Through five months, 1941 precipitation stands at 8.28 inches versus 7.73 inches in 1930, a 1.55 inch edge for 1941.

Sham Air Blitz To Be Held Here June 4th

Winchester residents will witness an anti aircraft unit in action at 8 p m on June 4. Col Downer of the Army Corps will command. On June 4 a convoy of 950 men 40 officers and 130 trucks will arrive from Fredericksburg and encamp at the Winchester Planes. That night planes probably from Baltimore will fly in to observe tracking and guns practice with blank ammunition using 30 and 50 caliber machine guns and 37 millimeter anti aircraft guns. Batteries involved include A Battery Searchlight Headquarters Battery 2nd Battalion Regimental Headquarters Battery and E F G H Batteries. The convoy will depart for Big Meadows on June 5 between 6 and 7 a m.

Recapture Spirit and Ideals of Forefathers Urged

F L Largent Jr spoke at Memorial exercises urging the nation to regain the spirit in which forefathers fought for ideals. He stressed unity at home and personal responsibility to sustain the country’s progress amid rapid scientific advances and lingering dangers. The ceremony included a parade by Guardsmen from Fort Meade and local veterans groups.

West Virginia police on alert for weekend defense

Charleston May 30 State police civilians and industrial guards joined forces with other states in an anti sabotage alert. Superintendent John W Bosworth said the whole department was on watch to prevent any attempts to hamper defense efforts over the weekend holiday.

Precaution Is Being Taken Against Spies

Across the nation civilian authorities and military officers ordered widespread precautions against possible sabotage. Fort Dix cancelled 14 000 leaves, Fort Custer ran a realistic practice alert, and gun emplacements and guards were placed at defense plants as FBI and post commanders warned of security threats.

Want Definite Instructions On Aircraft Defense

The enrollment of volunteers to man aircraft defense observation posts in Winchester and Frederick county will not begin pending receipt of further instructions from state headquarters. Harry McCann, led by Capt. W. Glenn Elliott, state director, said today. He noted the materials received address the general situation and must coordinate with the statewide plan. In Berryville, H. B. Harris will enroll volunteers and present the matter to Lloyd Williams Post at a .next Wednesday meeting to seek possible announcement afterward.

Strikes Involve More Workmen

Secretary Perkins said April strikes involved more than four times as many workers as March with over five times as much idleness. A total of 400 new strikes affected about 500000 workers and caused 7800000 man-days idle. Bituminous coal stoppage accounted for about two thirds of workers and over three quarters of man-days. Labor Department conciliations totaled 367 strikes, lockouts, threatened strikes and other disputes.

Five of eighteen men who reported for induction at Roanoke Virginia on May 28 had their papers returned. Selective Service officials said more papers may be at the post office due to no mail delivery today.

Washington May 30 Authentic reports to Congress say 28 ships loaded with war supplies in U S ports have been sunk en route to Britain since September 1939.
