Gainesboro High School lists senior class members including Louise Franks Virginia Kern Vaida Michael Glenn Wisecarver Curtis Braithwaite Sidney Secrist Marguerite Wisecarver and Catherine Shade in a yearbook-style notice.
The North American College in Rome will send its 106 student priests back to the United States tomorrow aboard the Manhattan and President Harrison. Bishop Ralph Hayes notified home bishops on May 17 of a consular warning urging Americans to leave Italy.
President Roosevelt announced the new defense commission is ready to operate with a broad program to boost U S defense after Europe’s latest moves. A White House statement says Congress will be asked for more than 1 billion dollars for army and navy needs including tanks planes and materiel reserves.
MA Winchester notes the wartime urgency as U S warplanes reach England quickly after final approval. She praises local high school graduates at Handley Stephens City Gainesboro and Middletown totaling 105 48 12 and eight respectively. She urges graduates to see this era as a chance for greater rewards with effort.

The U S Lines 24 269 ton Washington sailed for southern Europe carrying first aid supplies for Red Cross units. It carried 77 passengers including 27 Americans and 11 ambulance drivers plus 2 693 sacks of mail.

Mrs. Mary Virginia Rainsberger of 605 South Cameron Street died at her home at 4 a.m. after a 40 year confinement from a spine injury from a stairs fall. A 97 year old Civil War era widow born November 26 1842 in Strasburg Virginia she moved to Winchester after marriage to Joseph Daniel Rainsberger January 14 1867. She lived with her son Edward after 1915 and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.
Winchester Small Loan and Finance Co lists a 1940 DeLuxe Ford Coach a 1936 Dodge Sedan and a 1935 Ford Standard Coupe for cheap to quick buyers. Advert proceeds May 29.
Rummage sale hosted by the Girls Circle of Highland Avenue Church at 139 North Main Street on Saturday starting 9 30 a m. Proceeds support church activities and community outreach.

Memorial Day events in Winchester included a 2 30 p m National Cemetery service by the Ladies National Memorial Association led by Major Robert Rives. Mayor C R Anderson introduced him as crowds paused amid rain threats and a city parade preceded the ceremony. Local units joined the observance with Boy Scouts and veterans groups while Buddy Poppy sales benefited disabled veterans.
The Handley High Latin team, after competing in the State wide Latin Tournament on April 13, earned a plaque for the Northern District of Virginia for the highest district average. Handley’s team included Isabelle Larrick, Jean Fahrney, Philip Barnhart, Walter Bailey, Ralph Bailey, Alta Ayers and Morris Cather. Walter Bailey and Morris Cather received special honorable mention certificates, with Cather posting the second highest state year grade, missing first by a fraction. Harrisonburg High School placed second.
London reports the battle on the French and Belgian channel coasts continues as Allied forces withdraw to the coast due to German pressure. The information ministry says over 70 German aircraft were destroyed and many more damaged yesterday.
Dr John Lloyd Newcomb president of the University of Virginia will speak at the Northern Virginia Alumni Association banquet to be held at the George Washington Hotel on June 1 at 7 o'clock. It marks his first Winchester visit since becoming university president with R Gray Williams rector and coach Murray also set to speak. many alumni from the area are expected.
Paris May 30 official journal announces 100 French women aviators will join the air army for non combat duties. They must be 21 to 40 and have at least 300 hours of solo flight.
Retreating troops around Dunkerque fend off attacking forces as a ring of fire is dropped on the area. A hospital ship arrives on the south English coast carrying wounded with portholes smashed and hull damage evident.
Thousands of first arrivals from the Flanders front reach England aboard warships transports and hospital ships. Troops not immediately engaged evacuated while others have already reached this country through a Channel convoy under heavy bombing and machine-gun fire.
Allied forces press a ring of fire around Dunkirk as 14 retreating troops fight off an estimated 440000 to 600000 German attackers in the closing hours of the battle of Flanders. Rear-guard actions shield main columns while a 60 ship evacuation runs, and a hospital ship arrives with wounded. The German high command claims the battle nears end with substantial Allied losses and many French units cut off around Lille.
Four American volunteer ambulance drivers are reported captured by German forces in France. James Wood Johnson, president of the American Volunteer Ambulance Corps in New York, said a Paris commander advised by German radio that the four were prisoners.

The RAF claimed 52 enemy planes down with 25 bombers, ten British aircraft missing, as German command described the BEF in full dissolution amid mass destruction of transports near Dunkerque and Ostend.
