WPB chairman J A Krug forecasts 4.8 million workers and fighters being let go over June to August 1945 4.8 million to be released includes 1 million from armed forces and 3.8 million from war plants. Net unemployment expected to rise to about 1.3 million.
Democrats in Winchester will meet on Thursday May 31 at 8 o clock in the Corporation Court room City Hall to elect a Democratic City Committee. All Democrats in the city are urged to attend.
London May 29 Foreign Secretary Eden urged France to withdraw reinforcements to the Levant to avoid Arab world flare ups that could hinder the Pacific war. He noted about 500 extra French troops and warned against actions in Syria and Lebanon. United States expressed concern as tensions rise between French forces and natives.

British Second Army troops captured the notorious broadcaster William Joyce known as Lord Haw Haw along with his wife. Joyce, a 39 year old New York native born to Irish parents, was a long time German propaganda tool who mocked Britain during the war. He faced potential treason trials in the country he sought to undermine.

In Moscow on May 29 1944 Lt Gen N N Pronin announced all Soviet youths in Eighth and Ninth grades aged 15 and 16 would begin army training June 1. The plan calls for 100 percent participation and aims to raise military proficiency to wartime levels with veterans directing field training. The program follows the 17 year olds’ officer specialist exams and seeks decisiveness endurance and initiative among participants. National War Finance Director Ted R Gamble said $45 million will be sent by the army for treatment and rehabilitation of about 100000 sick and wounded men. The Treasury must sell 2.4 million bonds of 25 dollars each to raise the 45 million. Bond sales to date total 2.529 billion, including 1.543 billion in series E bonds. The goal is 14.0 billion. The drive runs May 14 through June 3.
A warrant is issued against Charles R Bish manager of the Hanover Poultry Company for operating a poultry slaughter house in violation of city ordinance. Judge John Rice indicated a hearing date may be next week. C Nicholas of Winchester Poultry Company was fined 500 dollars plus costs in Corporation Court. action will continue if violations persist while operators must relocate by May 1.
