Allied generals announce strategic moves as Weygand appears ready for a bold assault while Belgium distances itself from Leopold. German high command declares the pocketed Belgian frontier doomed. British troops confront severe obstacles in Channel crossing.
The Handley High School Class of 1940 commencement will begin Sunday June 2 with a bac calaureate sermon at 8 p m in the school auditorium. The service, a union event with Winchester Ministerial Association, features Dr W A Palmer as speaker and includes prayers readings and music by the Handley Choir and Orchestra.
MA Winchester urges public participation in Flag Week from June 7 to 14. The Flag Week committee chaired by Superintendent Garland Quarles aims to have every home business and public building display the American flag. Citizens without a flag should buy one before June 7 and display it during Flag Week. Further notices will appear in The Star.

Preparations to meet a threatened German invasion rushed along a vulnerable stretch of the British coast as civilians awaited a government order to move farther inland.
The administration and congressional leaders agreed to raise 3.0 billion dollars in new taxes over five years to cover defense costs. President Roosevelt approved the plan drafted by Secretary Morgenthau and Representative Doughton. It envisions selling 3.0 billion dollars in national defense obligations and annual taxes of 0.6 to 0.7 billion dollars to retire debt and pay interest. The conferees also urged raising the debt limit from 45 to 48 billion dollars to support the new defense funds.
David Hottle of this city was elevated to Grand Patriarch at the 103rd annual Virginia Odd Fellows session in Roanoke. The funeral for Francis ke Hodgson 79 retired Winchester businessman was conducted this afternoon from the residence at 120 East Clifford Street. He died Sunday night at 9:45 at home after a long retail career in the city. Clergy from Grace Lutheran Christ Episcopal and the Presbyterian church officiated. Interment followed at Mount Hebron cemetery with pallbearers George Woodward Louis Grim Marion Anderson Tom Trier Richard Brown and Fred White.
Paris May 28 The Belgian army capitulated to Germany on orders by King Leopold III, leaving Britain and France weaker as Dunkerque port undefended and 250 000 soldiers lost from 18 Belgian divisions. Reynaud said Belgium will still fight and reorganize with French assistance.
Thirty Allied divisions gathered south of the Aisne near Rethel for a decisive offensive to reach trapped French and British troops in the Lille pocket. Generalissimo Weygand has positioned much of the force before the Belgian surrender, with divisions reporting 15 000 to 18 000 men each in the massed attack.
A war ministry spokesman said the Belgian army nearly all have surrendered to Germany after King Leopold capitulated. He put the number at about 300,000 prisoners and warned the situation is very difficult for the Allies.
The Belgian king Leopold ordered surrender to Germany with about 300000 troops, but his government in exile in Paris disowned him and declared him deposed. Premier Pierlot said reorganized Belgian forces would keep fighting for the Allies. Churchill told Commons Allied generals were to press on.
Edward Perry, 16 months old, escaped serious injury after a kerosene stove toppled at 448 North Loudoun Street. The right arm burned, memorial hospital care by Private T J Starrett, then returned home. Mr. and Mrs. Perry were present. mother pulled the child from flames as the stove toppled from a coal stove with a weak leg. floor caught fire but damage was minor. firemen responded promptly.

Arthur Grim of Stephens City will portray the American Indian in tomorrow's pageant finale of commencement exercises. Other leading characters don frontier garb, with rain forcing a possible Thursday redraw at 5 p.m. Mrs. Joe Clevenger and May Jane Grim are among those in pantalettes.
Indications suggested the main Belgian army of 400000 to 500000 men had ceased fighting and only minor units or new levies remained for the Belgian government. Germany announced Leopold would be quartered in a Belgian castle and possibly restored later if they win the war. Churchill told the House of Commons the Allies would carry on and ignore Leopold's action as the Belgian government reorganized the army in Paris lines.
A historical and educational pageant presented by 500 adults and students from Stephens City will take place tomorrow at 5 PM on the School Campus. About 700 people are expected to attend as dishes and awards are presented to 48 seniors by R. E. Jones.
