Police chief M A Doran announced a city wide registration of German alien females aged 14 and up. Registration runs six AM to eight PM daily from June 17 to June 26 1918 at police headquarters, with postmasters handling non urban areas.
Confederate Veterans Allied societies and local cadets invited to National Cemetery for 2 30 PM Memorial Exercises. President Wilson proclaims May 30 as National Decoration Day and a day of prayer and fasting to seek guidance for war efforts and lasting peace. Local church services planned to avoid clashing with cemetery events. Mrs Henry F Kennebee returns from visit to Elkins Virginia and Hagerstown Maryland.
German storm troops attacked American lines near Picardy but were repelled with heavy losses as Pershing’s men held and counter attacked. American hospitals faced bombardment as Germans crossed the Aisne and bombarded field units.
Major General Leonora Wood asserts readiness to obey orders amid reports he was deprived of command of the eighty ninth division. He conferred at the Capitol with Senator Warren of Wyoming, Pershing’s son-in-law, but the purpose of the talks was not disclosed.

Washington May 28 Interned Germans are to be put to work on the war gardens at camps and cantonments nationwide. The National War Garden Commission announced squads are already en route to camps in Georgia Massachusetts and others to Camp Dix New Jersey and Camp Grant Illinois as part of a program to aid wartime agriculture.
Grace Lutheran Church to hold two services on Thursday May 30 at 10 a m and 8 p m in accordance with the President's proclamation. The church will stay open all day for individual prayer after 9 a m.
CALUAS Texas May 28 Discovery that Texas cattle will eat wings of aeroplanes if leftunguarded prompts a general order to stick with the machine. Cadets are told never to abandon ships even far from roads as cows crave airplane dope and will chew linen planes to pieces for the flavor. Souvenir hunters loom as aviators fear country crowds may break up ships for keeps during forced landings.
Fifty four young men from Winchester and Frederick County depart for Camp Lee under the charge of T Russel Cather the elected prosecuting attorney who resigns his practice and fiduciary posts to serve with the group his duties of law practice are assumed by John M Steck pending a successor to Mr Cather as county prosecutor.
In observance of a presidential proclamation a union service for women will be held Thursday May 30 at the Presbyterian Church from 9 30 to 10 30 A M. Mrs Holmes Conrad will preside and Winchester women are invited to attend for prayers and music focused on the war effort and divine guidance.
Washington May 28 The War Department announced thirty eight casualties among overseas forces. Seven killed in action one died of wounds one by drowning five of disease eighteen wounded severely and six reported missing in action. Major Raoul Lufberry, the American ace, was killed in action.

Community League of Star Tannery holds a mentored service at Gravel Springs Church and cemetery on the 8th of Lune to raise Red Cross funds. refreshments to follow.
Excerpt notes 564 men went to Camp Lee yesterday and predicts many more will be called in June. Virginia’s War Department quota of 12929 expected to draw about 6500 into camps. 6400 still to go, with June induction targeting 21 year olds and a larger white male share due to only 30 colored registrants. Local exemption board concentrates on June 6 registration and progressing white and colored selections for Winchester and Frederick County.
The Star asks weekly subscribers to have their 6 cent per week payments ready for the collector on Saturdays to speed collections amid labor shortages. This will help the collector return to the office by 4 or 4:30 p m. and reduce delays.
A rummage sale will be held in the Bell building on June 6 to aid tubercular patients and others in ill health. People may donate clothing and furniture by leaving items with Mrs H D Fuller or at the Bell building on the day. Proceeds benefit the District Nurse Association.
In Rome on May 28 a stampede at the Church of the Trinity near Subiaco during the annual pilgrimage killed seven people and injured about 120 after a woman cried out Save yourselves. Subiaco lies 33 miles northeast of Rome.
Berryville resident Hom Blackburn Smith will address the Red Cross work at the M E Church in Stephens City at 8 30 p m on Wednesday evening May 29. All are invited.
