Violations cited as DMZ breaches top 5000

The U S command accuses North Vietnam of more than 5000 DMZ violations since the November bombing halt. Marines near the DMZ suffer casualties from mortar fire with eight killed and 24 wounded in a Sunday attack. U S officials accuse Hanoi of stockpiling across the DMZ while Hanoi denies any agreement.

Kidnapper Is Given Life Term for Mackle Case

A Georgia jury convicted Gary Steven Krist of kidnapping coed Barbara Jane Mackle for a $500000 ransom but spared the death penalty due to the elaborate effort to keep her alive. Krist, 24, received a life sentence on mercy, with parole possible after seven years. The victim was buried in an 8 by 2 by 2 foot box for 83 hours with food water and a ventilation system before being rescued after the ransom was paid.

Democratic Committee Elects Frederick County Executive Body

At a Democratic mass meeting in the county courthouse the Frederick County Democratic Executive Committee was reelected with two changes. Edward K. Miller moved to Hagerstown and G W Lemley resigned due to ill health. Reid Lunsford and Ken McDonald filled their seats from Shawnee and Stephens City respectively. Chairman Alson H. Smith urged that the primary would strengthen the party.

Brush fires keep Round Hill firemen busy all day

Wind driven blazes along Armel Hill near Mt. Williams Road burned four to five acres of brush and woods as Round Hill and neighboring companies fought flames for about two hours. Three Officers Wounded in Seattle Clash and Texas Shooting

In Seattle three policemen were shot and nine wounded as crowds clashed with police in a predominantly Negro area after protests by the Black Student Union at Seattle Community College led to violence. A trustee resigned as talks continued, and a governor’s appointee was expected soon. In Denton a rookie officer’s gun discharged during a traffic incident near Texas Woman's University, critically wounding a 18 year old girl, Glenda Hopkins.
