North Viet and U S exchanges were noted during the Shenandoah graduation exercises as a citation honored Senator Byrd for his long interest in education and youth. The ceremony occurred yesterday with a Star Photo credit to Jim Hamilton.
Weekend combat surged as North Vietnamese forces deployed long range antiaircraft guns near the demilitarized zone. U S. allied firepower repelled the guns, while more than 1,000 enemy troops were killed and American casualties reached 54 dead and 192 wounded. The fight extended from outskirts of Saigon to central highlands with heavy clashes near Dak To.
Paris reports show workers in major cities rejected the wage settlement despite officials, management, and government agreeing to the terms. Paris suffered scattered power cuts as unions toured facilities like Renault and Citroen, with no prediction on acceptance. Prime Minister Pompidou warned of potential cuts to costly defenses if the pact falters.

Dave Baro and Robin Moore. Authorities tracked and captured suspect Roberto Higuer a near Pismo Beach as roadblocks remained in effect.
Dewey Arthur Carpenter Jr. received a life sentence in Corporation Court for the murder of Violet Lynn Sherman in the Victory Grocery Store at 1024 S Loudoun St. in October. He previously pled innocent, then changed to guilty on April 22 after extradition from Martinsburg.
The Supreme Court unanimously rejected freedom of choice attendance plans in three southern districts. It held that if reasonably available alternatives exist such as zoning and faster conversion to unitary non racial systems, freedom of choice must be deemed unacceptable.
U S Senator Harry F Byrd Jr was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters as Shenandoah College and Conservatory conferred degrees. The citation highlighted his career as editor and lawmaker and his support for education and youth. Commencement honored 48 graduates at Shenandoah auditorium with speeches by Floyd L Falk and a hooding investiture.
The fifth Paris session lasts 4 hours 10 minutes with U S envoy Harriman condemning North Vietnam for distorted casualty figures. Washington rejects demands to set a bombing cessation date and presses for talks on related issues. Hanoi signals willingness to discuss cessation alongside other matters as Deng states Vietnam’s right to fight wherever the enemy stands.
