London May 27 government white paper on employment policy states rationing and price controls will continue temporarily after the war. It asserts no general unemployment problem in Europe in the immediate postwar years but warns periodic shortages will occur.
Early returns from Iceland's May 27 vote show about 70 percent in favor of severing ties with Denmark. Results: severance 47,856 to 264, constitution 46,672 to 961. Sveinn Bjornsson, Iceland's present regent, is listed as likely president of the new republic.
Secretary of the Navy Forrestal says Allied sea warfare has reduced Japan’s outer Pacific defenses to a name only. The War Food Administration will supply Virginia schools with snapbeans beets tomatoes carrots and cabbage to can for lunch programs. Schools will be paid two and a half to seven cents per can depending on size. The program starts immediately and targets non profit schools with canning facilities.
