AP reports a record 337 American KIA in the week ending with the demilitarized zone emptied of allied troops after its invasion. US casualties reached 10 253 dead and 61 425 wounded overall with 2 282 wounded and 31 missing, while North Vietnamese losses totaled 2 464.
Ellis B. Dodson of Stephens City was acquitted of murdering his son Robert Dodson in Frederick County after a daylong trial. A three-woman nine-man jury ruled in Dodson's favor, saying the elder man fired a warning shot that accidentally killed Robert during a Saturday confrontation in the family yard.
A late scattered frost struck low areas overnight. Weather records cite the latest general frost since 1956 at 37 degrees at Winchester Fruit Laboratory. Roanoke, Richmond, and Smith Mountain Lake also reported record low readings, with 39 to 40s expected for the night and a warmer Friday forecast.
Frost blankets low areas with a white look described as young snow. Residents recall similar events, then forecast warmer temperatures. Kinney's Shoe Store advertises a deal offering 2 pairs for 5.00 across Thursday to Saturday.
The Rev. Philip F. Farrell has been named pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Parish. He previously led St. Vincent's in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, and will succeed Rev. Henry Stragisher who moves to Holy Trinity in Norfolk. Farrell, born in Providence Rhode Island, was ordained in 1940 and has served at St. Bede's Williamsburg Blessed Sacrament Alexandria St. Paul's Portsmouth where he led Catholic Charities.

The House passed most of President Johnson's school aid bill after a 14 hour session, removing a key Office of Education program and shifting some funds to states. The measure authorizes 3.5 billion dollars for 1968-69 with an 80 percent focus on aid to low income districts, while efforts to desegregation enforcement faced amendments.
U S military experts say Israel, though outnumbered, could defeat the combined Arab armies if major powers refrain from intervening. Israel's edge comes from superior training and maintenance with about 300 000 soldiers and airmen versus roughly 400 000 Arabs. Open war would likely pit Israel against Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon, with Iraq and Saudi Arabia pledging support but limited on the ground. Israel would deploy about 100 000 troops on the Sinai frontier and keep larger forces on the northern and eastern fronts. Jordanian army regarded as among the strongest. Syria fields about 60 000. The report notes internal pressures and alignment with the United States could limit Arab troop deployment.
A recon reconstruction shows Maj. Richard H. Pearce piloting an aircraft to Cuba at wavetop height to evade U.S. radar. He sent an any stations broadcast 13 minutes before landing near Havana and later sought asylum with his son Richard Jr. Havana Radio cited the asylum decision.
Carroll Reid resigns as Head Football Coach and Athletic Director at Clarke County High School after a 43–3–2 record over five years. He cites a prohibitive contract and heavy workload. Reid notes his 11 years coaching with no losing seasons and previous success at Broadway and Madison.
U Thant cuts peace mission to Egypt short and heads back to New York to report to the U N Security Council on talks with President Nasser. He carries no new peace formula and plans to seek the council's guidance on next steps in the Middle East crisis.
