Severe Wind Storm Damages Farms West of Middletown

A May 25 storm in the lower Shenandoah Valley caused major destruction near Minebank, two miles west of Middletown. E R McDonald’s barn, threshing shed, and machinery were wrecked while oaks felled and a dog-house was hurled by the wind. J D Huffman’s barn roof was ripped off and rafters carried away. Apple trees in the Hiett and Brumback orchards were damaged as young fruit blew away. Sheep losses were reported at the Hiett farm.

Rotarians To Hear Mathews In Virginia Meeting

George Mathews district governor of the 187th Rotary District will speak to Rotary Clubs in Virginia and nearby areas. 25 Crewmen Hurt By Blasts In Oil Tanker Fire

In Fall River Massachusetts on May 35 a string of blasts wounded at least 25 crew members aboard the tanker Elwood. The explosions caused a fire that endangered the ship and forced some sailors to jump overboard. Wounded men were transported to a hospital with burns and bricklike injuries.

Compromise On Relief Bill Aims To Limit PWA Power Projects

Washington May 25 Senator Adams floor managed the $3.247 billion relief bill and submitted a compromised amendment to restrict PWA funds for power plants that would compete with privately owned systems if those private rates are fair and publicly regulated. The amendment, backed by Adams, is less drastic than prior Senate approval. Pope proposed adding 212 million for farm benefits via processing taxes early in 1939.

United Air Lines twin engine crash near Cleveland kills ten

W A Patterson, United Airlines president, said both engines failed simultaneously just before the crash eight miles from Cleveland airport.
