J E VanDeborough an insurance agent was brought from Washington DC by City Sergeant Barr and jailed on a warrant charging him with obtaining 200 from Wm F Stuart by false pretenses. He appeared before Justice Weems and was held for the grand jury, unable to post bail. Stuart alleges VanDeborough promised 400 accident insurance policies for 200, then sold none and kept 150 and 50 installments. VanDeborough returned without a requisition and claims no fraud.

Captain Newberry Sentenced for Fraud and Escape
Alfred Dion aka Captain Newberry a French Canadian fraudster and World War II era flying hero faced charges in Winchester for obtaining money from American Legion members. From Dyer Indiana May 25 Associated Press reports the Monon train No 36 en route from Indianapolis to Chicago struck a milk truck trailer at St John four miles away overturning the engine and derailing five coaches. Engineer William Ballengar of Indianapolis was pinned under the engine and fireman Floyd E Crowder of Indianapolis was scalded to death. Passengers were shaken but unharmed. The milk truck driver fled after the crash.
