He notes heavy scab infection in nearby orchards after recent rains and predicts further spread from summer spores, urging immediate spraying to protect yields and profits.

Washington May 25. Declaring a railroad rate holiday to let railways set own rates without price controls was discussed at the Treasury as a possible solution to the nation’s transportation problem. High officials noted benefits if rail earnings under the new cut hold, but favored allowing carriers to determine rates. A five year or longer government rate regulation holiday could let carriers meet regional traffic with market based pricing, improving service and industrial conditions. Mellon reportedly favored removing rate restrictions and returning to competitive pricing.

Shenandoah Valley League officials will meet in Woodstock to draft the schedule with games likely starting in June.
White Plains New York May 26 Walter S Ward son of a millionaire baker claims he shot Clarence Peters in self defense near Kensico reservoir two weeks ago. Ward's lawyers turned over two pistols alleged to figure in his story of a battle with blackmailers. District Attorney Weeks says the blackmail plot must be revealed if Ward pleads self defense.
A series of preaching services are announced for Sunday May 28 at Pleasant Valley United Brethren Church. Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. at Fairview church and 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the same location.

Three US Army officers on duty in Washington will judge the annual dry contest between Winchester High School and Shenandoah Valley Academy at the Winchester fairgrounds at 10 30 AM on May 31. Major Louis P is senior judge, with Major Thomas Hartigan and Capt Guy E Manning among the assistants. The contest seeks the banner donated by the Chamber of Commerce, with Winchester High having won twice and Shenandoah Valley Academy once. Admission will be charged at the gates to defray contest expenses.
The Winchester Baseballs Club visits Academy Grounds for a 2 PM Friday game against the local team. Both sides look to build momentum as the season progresses with a league clash expected to draw steady local attendance.
