House Voted Cuts In Foreign Aid Said Crippling
Washington officials warned that House cuts in Truman era foreign aid would hinder NATO targets in Europe. The Mutual Security Agency said reductions totaling 6.16 billion dollars, 1.74 billion below request, would cripple European defense unless the U.S. bridged the gap. The Taft faction led deeper cuts affecting economic and military aid to Europe and the Far East, despite Eisenhower opposition.
