GM offers wage rise to UAW CIO in Detroit talks
Detroit May 24 GM Corp offered the CIO United Auto Workers a wage increase of more than six cents an hour. Speculation had GM at eight to 12 cents. UAW-CIO had sought 25 cents. Gov. Sigler stepped into Chrysler strike talks, aiming to revive negotiations between UAW-CIO and Chrysler after a 13 day walkout. The governor arranged a Wednesday meeting at his Detroit headquarters to restart bargaining.

Spectacular Fire Demonstrations Draw Eleven Companies
Eleven fire companies from Winchester and other towns attended a Saturday fire fighting demonstration in Clearbrook led by Chief Taylor Barr. The event featured six demonstrations on nozzle types wet water farm fires aerial ladders and oil fire tactics with no accidents and about 250 spectators. Lawrence praised the training value and the orderly conduct of the event overseen by R A Bird and Jack Keefe of Rockwood Sprinkler Co.

Palm Springs California May 24 Jacqueline Cochran a renowned speed ace says she set a new world record flying a war surplus P 51 Mustang. She was clocked at about 448 miles per hour over a 1242 mile round trip from Palm Springs to Santa Fe and back, surpassing the previous 440 mph mark set May 19 1946 by Lt J J Hancock in a jet propelled Shooting Star.
