Walter Austin Sloat 51 a Winchester businessman of 621 South Stewart street died at Memorial Hospital after emergency appendectomy last week his condition worsened and he died at 12 15 am He was a Market Street Methodist Church member and active in the Charlie Rouss Fire Company He is survived by his widow Meta Sar Harry Sloat and Ernest G Sloat and will be buried at Mount Hebron Cemetery with services at his residence Monday afternoon He was a native of Winchester and had worked in insurance firms Bryarly Green R Thornton Bryarly since 1914.

A joint British and French force repelled German parachute attackers in a small French village behind the western front. Sixteen RAF ground staff rested after 17 hours on the road when bombers struck. a house to house fight ensued with French troops. By daybreak all parachutists were dead.

The 17th annual Virginia Lions International convention in Danville elected Donald Shriver of Norfolk and Terrell Bowman of Altavista as governors of eastern and western districts. Winchester Lions Club won District Governor’s Cup for activities and the attendance cup in Class A. Cape Charles received the attendance cup and Petersburg’s L Bristow was presented a silver service and a watch. Bryan Stotler announced the awards in a message to The Star.
Richmond Virginia May 24 State Prison Superintendent Rice M Youell announced a convict killed and another wounded during an escape attempt at prison road camp No 6 in Tazewell county Raymond Myers 30 was killed by guards gunfire and Rowland Gonyea 23 wounded Gonyea transported to Clinch Valley Hospital Richlands Both men broke from a group near a wooded area and refused to halt Myers died at the scene Myers who died had been received at the penitentiary October 28 1939 from Winchester on a 10 year robbery sentence He was a Ludlow Massachusetts native.
In September 1939 a robbery at the McKinley Turner filling station involved Norman Peter Morrison and Virginia Brawdy who, aided by Thelma West escaped from the Ohio Reformatory. The trio fled through three states before being captured and returned to Winchester. Myers, the sole member sentenced locally, faced legal action for the crime.

French army engineers detonated numerous canal locks on the Rhine-Rhone canal flooding hundreds of square miles on the French side of the Rhine near Basil. The action aimed to control advancing hostile forces and disrupt river traffic amid ongoing military operations.
