Refugee Screening Hurdles Delay U S Intake Efforts
A subcommittee hearing outlined bottlenecks in refugee screening across federal agencies. Analysts cited the need to comb files from the FBI, State, Defense, CIA, INS, and DEA for derogatory information, plus the challenge of coordinating clearance for multi member refugee families. By week’s end the clearance rate was expected to rise from 25 to 50 percent as process improvements continue. Julia Taft will replace Brown who departs to lead the Middle East Institute.
