Life Sentence For Man Bound During Trial Convicted

A 23 year old man was convicted of first degree murder after a two day trial in Alexandria. Mack Holland Jr. was sentenced to life imprisonment for the shooting death of a city youth bureau detective during the December 27 1972 Seminary Plaza bank robbery. Holland was gagged and bound to a chair during parts of the trial after shouting at the judge. Prosecutors said five bank employees identified Holland as one of three robbers who forced workers to lie on the floor and fled with 4888 dollars. The victim, Conrad L Birney an off duty detective, was killed by a single shot. Two other suspects Percy Floyd and Ralph Walker face separate trials. Floyd and Swersky claimed differing witness descriptions, but prosecutors called these discrepancies minor compared to the overall evidence. Holland had earlier escaped from federal prison in Petersburg and was arrested in Washington DC. Walker was on parole and Floyd had escaped from the Lorton facility.
