A U S Air Force sergeant responsible for ground crew duties near London reported a C130 Hercules cargo aircraft stolen. The incident prompted an investigation into the airman's actions and potential motives as authorities pursue the missing plane.
An American Air Force ground crew chief, Sgt. Paul A. Meyer, stole a four-engine C130 Hercules at Langley AFB and flew it out of England. With about 13 hours of fuel at takeoff, he reportedly called his wife by radio and indicated he hoped to reach home. Officials noted he had no training on the aircraft and was last seen heading southwest over the Atlantic, with U.S. and British jets unable to locate him.
