A veteran Democratic power in Shenandoah Valley politics since the 1890s, he mentored candidates and helped shape campaigns while also practicing law. Survived by widow and four sons, with services at 3 PM Thursday.

The Sailors Club of Handley High School presented a musical program at the George Washington Hotel. Twenty eight members in white sailor uniforms impressed the audience with orchestral selections choruses and vocal numbers. Club director is Mrs. Madeline Riley. Luther Oates Fatally Struck Near Capon Bridge
Luther Oates about 78 and a member of a prominent Hampshire county family was fatally injured when struck by a Maryland licensed car near Capon Bridge. The driver from Front Royal gave bond and remained at the scene. Oates died en route home after the accident on Timber Ridge. He leaves a widow Ida Sirbaugh and daughter Leila Berkheimer. he was a half brother of Hiett Oates of Winchester and of the late J M Bud Oates. Funeral set for tomorrow at Fairview Lutheran Church.
