The highest decoration in France is conferred upon the plucky American youth by President Doumergue at the palace. Lindbergh is said to be eligible to earn up to one million dollars if he chooses to accept the honor.
A wave of agents and others gather at the American Embassy waiting to interest a world hero in schemes to make money. Dozens of letters and cablegrams arrive for classification. A new song honoring “lucky Slim” is reported.
A May 21 1927 cablegram from T Russell Cather vice president of the Winchester Virginia Chamber of Commerce to Capt Charles Lindbergh Paris France extends congratulations from Winchester citizens to the famed aviator. Capt Lindbergh is noted for his great accomplishment.
American aviator Charles Lindbergh was decorated with the Legion of Honor by President Doumergue at the Elysee Palace in Paris. The event included a kiss on the cheeks and a parade of accolades. The Aero Club of France planned to award its gold medal later, and Lindbergh was named an honorary alumnus of France’s Superior Normal School. Crowds gathered around the American embassy as celebrations continued.
The Fokker monoplane America failed to lift during a May test at Roosevelt Field New York with 13 600 pounds aboard. A wheel bearing overheated and froze causing the postponement of the planned New York to Paris record attempt. Backer Rodman Wanamaker said the flight remains for scientific purposes despite Lindbergh’s feat.
Boulevards rang with a new song written overnight in his honor as ambassadors and notables called to pay tribute. Messages of felicitation flooded in from across the globe. envelopes await opening. A line of motion picture reps and promoters waited outside the embassy. Lindbergh’s nonstop New York to Paris flight is confirmed as the long distance record at 3,647 miles.
The American Red Cross local chapter executive committee met in City Hall to review reports. Eleven ex service men and 37 civilians received aid, with 169 dollars collected in 30 days for family support. The report highlights poverty neglect and a neglected three year old placed in a Christian home. Eighteen schools were visited for Junior Red Cross work, praised by Frederick county teachers. Major Herbert A. Dargue led the American pan American flight from Bolling Field on a goodwill tour of the eastern United States. Accompanied by Walter Laughner he will land first in Harrisburg Pennsylvania with planned stops over Hanover York and Camden before heading to Dover Annapolis Baltimore and Trenton. Comdr Francesco de Pinedo meanwhile started from Trepassey for the Azores aboard the Santa Maria II on a long homeward leg.
An argument over Captain Lindbergh nationality led to a fatal stabbing. Joseph Hand, 45, of Brooklyn, died after being stabbed at an eastside cafe. Sidney LeVine, 28, was arrested on a homicide charge. Mrs Amanda Carper, mother of Mrs Charles L Russell, arrived in New York after the death.

The ceremony at Roosevelt Field celebrated Captain Lindbergh's non stop flight feat from New York to Paris. Commander Byrd lauded Lindbergh as having achieved a superhuman victory with grit and nerve. About 5000 people attended as the three motor liner America was christened by Wanamaker granddaughters.
Blue Ridge Hunt Club meet at Carter Hall, Berryville Va., May 23, featured top riding by Nancy Nelson Huidekoper of Baltimore. Notables from Washington and Baltimore attended as judges and breeders highlighted Clarke county as a rising thoroughbred center with multiple stables and notable horses including War Feathers, Sunference, and The Satrap. Results list winners across 16 classes for yearlings to polo ponies, with many winners trained by local breeders such as Dr L. M. Allen and Grove Stables.

The Virginian Association of the Moose held its second annual meeting at the Colonial Theater with about 180 members from lodges including Alexandria Norfolk Waynesboro Hampton Newport News Winchester Covington and Washington DC. A Mississippi valley flood relief collection of 75 was sent to the American Red Cross.
The observatory seismograph in London logged an earthquake starting at 11.50 last night and lasting four hours. Its epicenter was estimated about 4,700 miles away, possibly in eastern China.
