Walter Nichols, serving a burglary sentence, slips through a trap door improvised by himself as a violent storm rages. He vanishes from custody amid the chaos, with authorities launching a manhunt to recapture him.
Walter Nichols, 21, jailed in Winchester for burglary, escaped during a three minute blackout caused by a lightning strike. He reportedly ripped up boards around a sewer pipe in his cell, slid into the basement, and walked out beneath the front porch as the jail lights went out. Authorities believe he traveled toward Berryville and possibly Hagerstown, with officers alerted along the Norfolk and Western line. The escape was spotted within three minutes by Jailor L. B. Armel.
Charles A. Johnston, a Christiansburg merchant and former Virginia legislator, campaigned in Winchester yesterday and today for the Democratic primary in August. He has served in the House on several major committees and is seeking support for his candidacy.
The Ladies' National Memorial Association will meet at Mrs. William R. Willis on South Market Street tomorrow at 8 p.m. to complete plans for National Memorial Day observance on May 30.
The Shawnee Tribe No. 2 Ill word of Red Men will hold a service at Braddock Street M E Church South at 8 p.m. next Sunday May 27 Rev J H Haley of Middletown will preach the sermon and is a member of the order Local Red Men will meet at 7 p.m in their wigwam and march to the church occupying reserved seats A large turnout from Middletown Stephens City and nearby areas is expected.
The regular army now accepts applicants aged 18 to 40, raised from 17 to 35. The order was published at Maj. John H. Hughes recruiting office in New York.
A Winchester contingent joins 2,500 embryo officers at Fort Myer Virginia where cadets endure 16 hour days of rigorous training. Recruits rise at 5 30 am and work through the night as they prepare for front line leadership in the coming war against Germany.
George C. Leach, alleged bigamist, was arraigned yesterday in Hagerstown and pleaded not guilty. He was remanded to jail to await trial. He hired attorney S. M. Wolfinger. It is charged he married Mildred Louise Affleck of Winchester while married to another woman. The affair began at a paper mill job and led to travel to Lebanon, Pennsylvania. The Winchester wife exposed the scheme prompting arrest. Leach, an expert machinist, earns $60 weekly.
Miss Valonia A. Leach a member of an old Warren county family died Monday evening at Winchester Memorial Hospital after an illness of Brights disease. She was about 67. Her father was the late Leroy Leach of Warren county. The body was prepared here for burial and taken to Front Royal for interment today.
A red cross benefit features a garden party in the afternoon with dancing on the pavilion and various entertainments in the evening. Sandwiches tea ice cream cake and candy will be on sale throughout the event encouraging patriotic support for the Red Cross.
A bulletin from the United States Weather Bureau warns of possibly light frost across mountain districts tonight as cold air settles in. The Star reports this advisory for local farmers and residents.
A three year old boy, missing from the Cook farm, was found safe under a porch on the Baker farm two miles away. He had crawled through fences and across fields, then was returned to his mother after neighbors aided the search.
Washington May 23 Soldiers in mobilization camps will have amusements and recreation while training for war. A board led by Raymond B Fosdick aims to implement the Aldershot plan providing baseball boxing basketball football track and field meets and other athletic activities. The plan, praised by War College, mirrors the British approach used at Aldershot.
Invitations announce the marriage of M. C. Grattan Price of Harrisonburg Virginia to Miss Julia Page Pleasants daughter of Mrs. Howard Pleasants in Fort Worth Texas. The couple will reside in Harrisonburg after July first. Also notes a lost black onyx bar pin and Owings traveling to Mount Airy Maryland.

At market close in Baltimore wholesale markets, spot wheat was quoted at 3.04 dollars and corn at 1.80 dollars. Local dealers offered 2.75 dollars for wheat after the market closed.

Private David Fagle of Company I Second Virginia Regiment was badly injured when a freight train derailed near Shenandoah Virginia. He was taken to Winchester Memorial Hospital with a severely mashed right hand and fears of losing several fingers. He was en route to Shenandoah for squad supplies for men guarding Honey Run Bridge.
The District Nurse Association thanks the cast of Jack Among the Indians for a creditable Auditorium performance last Friday. A large audience attended and the net proceeds, after a small admission, were split with half given to the Nurse's Association. The association also thanks Shenandoah Valley Band for participating.
Washington May 28 major war revenue bill pending in the House would raise 1.8 billion dollars by taxing incomes and boosting tariffs. If enacted it would hit consumers hard with a 2 percent levy on top income, a 10 percent tariff rise, and higher prices for vital goods, arguing the Senate will rewrite it.
