War dispatch notes ferocious fighting on Okinawa as U S forces push against determined Japanese defense. Rear area reports and front line exchanges highlight rising casualties and intensified combat during strategic shori operations.
Washington May 22 President Truman announced that American British and Canadian reconversion efforts are coordinated to share Pacific war burdens fairly. The 19th lend lease report says aid will continue as a military necessity until victory and notes reduced Allied production after Germany's defeat. The document lists total lend-lease to Russia at 8.41 billion with 13 300 aircraft and 312000 tons of explosives, and total lend-lease to all Allies at 38.97 billion.
Rep Mansfield predicts Russia will join the war against Japan if China remains divided. He warns disunity could split China into two states and force a shift from China coast beachheads to assault on Japanese home islands. He notes Soviet entry would depend on China’s unity and affect U S policy.
Four additional mines in northern West Virginia restarted limited operations today amid a labor dispute. Seventeen mines remain idle, employing about 6,700 men with a 49,000 ton daily capacity. Local U M W affiliate Local 160 urged fire bosses at struck mines to resume work, while gas and safety crews stay on duty during the slowdown.
Prime Minister Churchill told Clement Attlee he would not delay the balloting and Elton suggests a summer general election. Parliament dissolution was expected to trigger Britain’s first general election in a decade with July dates eyed and possible delays to May 30 affecting July 11 as an alternate. The Labor Party withdrew from the coalition, prompting political maneuvering in London.
The Post War Planning Council of Richmond met at the George Washington Hotel to review the year and elect new executive directors Grant Pollock Mrs Harold Brown and Frances Beverly. Dr G M Modlin spoke on postwar planning and the GI Bill education rights for veterans. The Veteran Service Committee handles a full time information service with over six hundred monthly visitors. The constitution may be amended at any regular meeting by majority vote.
Manila dispatch reports heavy air strikes on Formosa and major ground advances on Luzon and Mindanao. US infantry claim at least 500 Japanese killed around central Luzon while other units push toward Mindanao facilities and Cagayan valley.

The extended forecast from May 23 to May 27 predicts above normal temperatures for the local zone and nearby West Virginia. Fair and cool Wednesday, then a rising trend through Thursday and Friday with showers likely Friday or Saturday followed by cooler air.
Moses Thompson, a Pittsylvania farmer and carpenter, is jailed in Chatham charged with murdering his daughter in law Mrs. Goldie Spencer Thompson. Commonwealth's Attorney Joseph Whitehead expects a preliminary hearing early next week. Thompson surrendered to Sheriff A. H. Overbey after claiming worry over her conduct while her husband Private Wallace R. Thompson is in Germany. Whitehead described the fatal shot as entering the back of her head after she awoke during the intrusion.
The Winchester Junior Board of Trade wins the Henry Giessenbier Memorial trophy at a Roanoke war conference, with Danville previously holding the award. Winchester also scored top honors for War Finance and Post War Planning Council projects, while 13 new members joined this year and 43 members now serve in the Armed Forces.
The American Legion Robert Y. Conrad Post No. 21 will hold memorial services at the U S National Cemetery on May 30 at 2 30 PM. Participants form at John Kerr School at 2 00 PM and march to the cemetery for a program featuring H E Alberti as speaker, Lincoln Gettysburg Address, and Benediction.
Washington May 22 Selective Service announced indefinite deferments for men 30 through 37 in useful work while predicting a heavier call of younger men. Maj. Gen. Hershey said occupational deferments liberalized, drafts for 30 through 37 halted while in useful work. July draft call cut about 25 percent to 90 000. Review 4 F files and reexamine 18 through 25 if eligible. For 26 through 29 current policies continue, but more occupationally deferred may be drafted later. The armed forces need younger men.
Rep. Doughton of North Carolina opened the tariff fight in the House urging broad new authority for the president to cut duties under trade agreements. He argued the move would show world cooperation over isolationism and outlined four reasons to extend reciprocal trade powers. Republicans opposed, warning of foreign labor competition and industrial loss.
London reports Tito appears to have completed an about face over Trieste and surrounding areas, with signs of an early solution. Yugoslav troops withdraw from southern Austria and Tito discusses long term status with Italy, while Allied forces advance in the Isonzo-Gorizia area and one American is wounded by a mine.
